Yeah, I’ve pretty much just been surfing baseball web sites today hoping to see that the Tigers have snagged someone. So far, nothing.
In the meantime, over at the Hardball Times they’ve had a couple guest columnists the last couple days. Yesterday it was Bill James. Today it is rising superstar Brian of Tigerblog fame writing about the history of the Expos. Nice job Brian.
Baseball Tonight is on ESPN right now with a “Hot Stove Special.” Gammons has mentioned the Tigers are serious contenders for Beltre, Renteria, and Orlando Cabrera, with Guillen moving to third if necessary. FYI.
Thanks Todd. The problem with Renteria is that he doesn’t come close to deserving the money they are talking about (4 years, 36 mil). Below average fielder, mediocre hitter with a Sanchez-eque .327 OBA last year.
I agree wholeheartedly on Renteria. Better glove than Guillen, but an average hitter with only one really good season with the bat.
In fact, I am pretty glad the Tigers haven’t hit on any of the guys they’ve targeted. If they back into J.D. Drew for CF, Koskie for 3B and Clement or Perez for SP, then that is far better than Finley(old), Glaus(injured), and Pavano(overrated), especially for the money they would take respectively.
Tom Gage said the Tigers offered Drew 4/36, which is less than Pavano is getting, and Drew is a hell of a lot more valuable than Pavano, especially if he plays CF.
Agreed wrt Pavano being overrated. I think he’ll be Javier Vazque
