As expected, Alan Trammell is no longer the manager of the Detroit Tigers. He has been offered a position within the organization as special assistant to the GM.

As a long time Tigers fan I wanted to see Alan Trammell succeed as the manager. But, of course, reality bites.
But I have to take issue with part of Dombrowski’s statement. What is the next level he is talking about? As a fan, I had expected 80 to 85 wins this season. Mostly in part, because of the pitching staff as a whole. If he talking about say, 90 to 95 wins and playoff contention, then he has a lot of work to do.
First, he has to hire a manager who knows how to win. Then he is has to fill those holes on the staff, so they have a chance to win. I don’t know if he do both. Sounds to me Dave Dombrowski is going to be on the hot seat next season.
Dave Dombrowski, I sorry but the wrong person got fired. Trust me Alan Trammell and Kirk Gibson knows how to win. You need to look in the mirror.

I think Dombo is our most important free agent next year. This organization was in sad shape when he took it over 4 years ago. The team has built a good minor league organization. We have certainly overspent for some FAs, but need to in order to attract some talent here. Our needs at this point:
1) Front line starting pitcher (and please get rid of Jason Johnson)
2) CFer
3) 3B (get a lefty like Koskie to platoon with Inge and use Inge in a utility role).

Along the same lines as the previous comments, I don’t think Tram deserved to be let go. Give him one more season to prove himself. How do you judge a managers sucess? How many wins the team puts up? If Tram could get out there on the field and win a few for the team, I think he would have. The players have to win the games. How do you get a team win? Maybe Jim Leland or whoever the next manager is, can show us. I like Alan Trammel and am sad to see him fired as skipper. I hope this streak of loosing season can end right here. The changes needed to make that happen could have very well been made with A.T. at the helm but … oh well. I think Brian has the right idea when he posted with “Sounds to me Dave Dombrowski is going to be on the hot seat next season”. I like what Mr. Dombrowski has done since his arrival but how do you judge a General Managers sucess????
We don’t need a centerfielder at all. The position is granderson’s for next year.
Alan Trammell renewed my waning interest in baseball since his appointment as Tigers’ manager. While this season was a major disappointment, I think I’m not alone in wishing he could stay on for one more year to try and prove himself. I’ll do my best to veiw his successor without prejudice, but it felt good to have a respected lifetime Tiger at the helm. I hope he chooses to remain with the organization in the limited position he’s been offered, but can imagine it will be both frustrating and a bit humiliating for him to watch the 2006 season unfold from an “assistant to the GM” role. Good luck, Tram!
As a lifetime Tigs fan, I would have liked nothing more than to see Tram and Gibson bring back respect to the old English “D”. Living in North Dakota gives one a different perspective then if you are there at the ballpark regularly. From my perspective DD made the right decision for the future, no matter how tough it was to do so. When Joe (the greatest general manager ever)Dumars pulled the plug on Carlisle there were many doubters as well. It takes a GM with guts to make moves to get to the next level. I watched 25-30 games this year and without fail questions decisions Tram made virtually every game! Leaving Pena in to face a left hander to see what he might be worth next year to the team after you have watched him for a thousand at bats the last 3 years? Over and over again you could see the he was managing with his heart and not his head. A top level “game” manager would have been worth 10 wins and a .500 record this year. Leyland, much like Larry Brown, will maximize matchups, make quality baseball decisions at possible game changing moments etc. If you need proof, wait until this years NBA playoffs and the Pistons don’t get out of the scond round because they get outcoached at the critical moments (God I hope I,m wrong about that) and will all appreciate loony selfish Larry for what he accomplished.
When I was still watching every Tigs’ game I could, I found myself ever frustrated with Trammell’s in game decisions. I really wanted the guy to get fired.
Now, having not watched a Tigers game in the last month, I find myself kinda sad to see him go.
Nontheless, I can’t forget the countless times I watched a game with my jaw hanging open due to the stupidity of some coaching move. I doubt another manager would be worth a 10 game improvement, but I have no doubt he would be an improvement.
Much of Tram’s support came from people who believed he had instilled a winning attitude into his players, and had cultivated a tight-knit, all-for-one style clubhouse. The absolute meltdown at the end of the season bellied this intepretation of Tram’s effect on the team, and I think that there really isn’t a single indictment of today’s firing that has significant evidence to back it up.
Now Dumbrowski truly has his work cut out for him…but if he can get the pieces together, and Jim Leyland takes the job, at least we won’t have to worry about the possibility of a horribly inexperienced manager blowing our chances. It’s all on Dubro’s players next year.
Trammell wasn’t a terrible manager, but it is time to move on, and see if we can find someone new. Trammell’s last two years have defined the Tigers in a new way, with Pudge, Guillen, and now Polanco, Shelton, and Maggs. The perfect way to build a team from scratch is to start with the coaching. Trammell was great as a player, but only mediocre at best at managing. I wish Alan all the best in any future endeavors. It is time we get a manager who does his job 100%, and then we can finally see whether the players themselves can win.
The more I think about this, the more I realize that Larry Parrish should be Tram’s replacement.
Parish? Are you kidding? Haven’t we already been down that road?
What about the season’s biggest disappointment in my opinon……Pudge Rodriguez??? For all the money he is paid we got what?
Joey, we were down that road with a AAA-caliber team. Since the future core of this club lies in the farm team talent and not so much in some of the current vets, why not Parrish?
I like the idea of Larry Parrish as the next manager. 1999 was not a good year to judge him by. Watching him in Toledo all year, since I live down here, I can say that Larry Parrish would be a good one to bring up.
With that said, I posted my comments about Alan Trammell on the blog that I am starting up (sorry if this comes across as advertising for my blog, I just didn’t want to type what I said twice.)

Well you might be right about Parrish, but I’d wager a ton of dough that he isn’t even being considered. Expect Leyland in the dugout next year.
Leyland isn’t a “bad” choice by any stretch and yeah, it looks like he’s going to be our guy.
