Tigers Minor League Wrap 5/23/07

Erie 7 Harrisburg 8 10 innings
The Tigers weren’t the only team in the organization to struggle in the late innings. Harrisburg scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 9th to force extra innings. Jon Connolly was one out away from a complete game. He had 9 K’s, and no walks. But he ended up being charged with 4 runs and Kyle Sleeth surrendered 3 more before he could record an out. Kody Kirkland and Andres Torres homered, and most of the starters had 2 hits.

Lakeland 5 Vero Beach 3
Ryan Roberson knocked his 11th homer. Max Leon had 2 hits. Matt O’Brien pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits with no walks and 1 K. Jacob Ramos went 2 1/3 and only allowed 2 walks while fanning 5.

West Michigan 1 Beloit 5
The Whitecaps only mustered 2 doubles and a single. Duane Below allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks over 6 innings.

Minors News

  • It looks like PJ Finigan has bone chips in his elbow. He’ll undergo additional tests.
  • More pitcher injuries with Phil Napolitan is headed to the DL. The release didn’t mention the injury, but Jose Fragoso was promoted for EST.

Game 45: Angels at Tigers

PREGAME: It will be Chad Durbin taking on Bartolo Colon in game 2 of the series.

In his last start, Durbin held the Red Sox offense at bay. In his last 3 starts he has a 2.37 ERA but he also has as many walks (8) as strikeouts over that period.

Colon got a late start on the season, but has been quite effective and able to pitch late into games. Four of his six starts have seen him pitch a full 7 innings. Part of the reason is that he hasn’t been walking people. He’s only allowed 7 free passes in 39 innings.

Game Time 7:05pm

POSTGAME: Things were going so well. Magglio Ordonez continued to campaign for the MVP with a couple solo homers. Pudge Rodriguez was shaking off his slump with a 3 hit night, and his out was to deep right-center. Curtis Granderson broke a string of 4 straight K’s by reaching base in every subsequent at-bat. Chad Durbin turned in another solid 5th starter type performance. And Jason Grilli was perfect for 2 innings, his best outing since a 3 inning effort in Toronto. Everyone reached base, and Brandon Inge the lone Tiger not to get a hit still walked and started a tough double play on a slow roller. A total team effort.

And then Jose Mesa happened. The strikeout of Vladimir Guerrero was encouraging, but then it was straight to the crapper. A single, a walk, and a 3 run homer made this a one run game. Inexplicably Jim Leyland left him in there to allow a deep shot to triples-ville. Finally he was lifted in favor of Tim Byrdak who did what Tim Byrdak does and fanned Chone Figgins to retire the side.

Jonesy was Jonesy.

Stuff I just didn’t understand tonight:

  • Mike Reilly’s strike zone. And this is from a fan of the team that I think benefited from it. But it was all over the place.
  • Mike Reilly missing the swing on the stolen base. It’s one thing to miss the call. It’s another to compound it by not asking for help.
  • Jim Leyland ordering Sean Casey to steal with 1 out and a full count with Craig Monroe up. To try and avoid a double play you send the slowest runner in the game with a guy who is in the top 10 in strikeouts. Really, what’s the more likely DP scenario?
  • Jim Leyland sticking with Mesa after the homer. There was no stall tactic or anything. Leyland was going to leave Mesa in come hell or high water to do the job. It has to be Leyland’s fierce loyalty to washed up National Leaguers. The Mesa signing was odd to begin with, and it only gets worse the more he plays. Forget Mesa’s 12.46 ERA for a minute. He’s now averaging a run per appearance.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/22/07

Charlotte 5 Toledo 6
Chris Shelton added 2 more hits, as did Timo Perez and Mike Hessman. Hessman’s though were a double and a homer. Zach Miner was strong again allowing 6 hits and 2 runs in 7 2/3 innings. He walked 2 and fanned 6.

Erie 4 Harrisburg 5
Jeff Larish homered and doubled and Matt Joyce homered and singled. Dallas Trahern was touched for 8 hits, including 2 homers, in 6 1/3 innings an was charged with 4 runs.

Erie 1 Harrisburg 2
Matt Joyce and Erick Almonte had the only 2 hits for the Seawolves. Andrew Kown allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, on 3 hits, no walks, and 6 strikeouts.

Lakeland 4 Vero Beach 3
Wil Rhymes had 3 hits including a double. Ryan Roberson added a double and his 10th homer to go along with a walk. Cameron Maybin singled and walked. Ovandy Suero stole his 31st, 32nd, and 33rd bases. Kyle Denney allowed 3 runs on 3 walks and 5 hits over 6 innings.

West Michigan 4 Beloit 5
Jeramy Laster hit a grand slam homer and singled. Angel Castro took the loss surrendering 5 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings.

Game 44: Angels at Tigers

PREGAME: The Tigers welcome in the AL West leading Angels for a 3 game series.

The Tigers will send out Mike Maroth, who missed his last turn in the rotation with the flu. He was still recuperating this weekend so I don’t know if he got in his regular throwing. The last game against the Angels, Maroth wasn’t able to get the win despite a ton of run support. He was lifted in the 5th inning after amassing 105 pitches.

The Tigers will face John Lackey who has been one of the best pitchers in the AL to date. He has a 2.43 ERA and it’s not the product of luck. He’s fanned 54 and walked 14 while allowing only 3 homers over 59 1/3 innings. There aren’t any Tigers with an established track record of success against Lackey.

So the pitching match-up looks to favor the Angels, but that hasn’t always mattered for the Tigers this year.

Game Time 7:05pm

POSTGAME: Long time readers know that I’m a stat guy. They’re objective and largely do a good job of describing what took place between the foul lines. Unless there is a “spectacular play” stat, numbers won’t tell the story from this game.

Sure you could look at Lackey’s line of 3 hits and 1 run over 5 innings and say he owned the Tigers. It was actually the other way around. Detroit routinely hit the ball sharply only to have it swallowed in Angel leather. Whether they were at ’em balls or diving grabs, the Angels made play after play. They took away extra base hits, run scoring hits, and pretty much everything.

So it was ironic when the Tigers staged a 9th inning rally on a tweener and a snort along with some walks. But fitting to see the game end on another spectacular play.

The offense was quite good tonight without much to show for it. They worked pitchers, they earned walks, they hit the ball hard. What are you gonna do except tip your cap to the other team for making the plays?

And I’ve hammered the middle relief, but Jason Grilli and Jose Mesa did their jobs tonight and made the 9th inning rally possible.

And speaking of the rally, the Tigers haven’t seemed overwhelmed by Francisco Rodriguez. They’ve faced him twice this year, and pushed runs across both times. I was hoping he would throw a few more pitches though tonight to rend him unavailable on Wednesday.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/21/07

Charlotte 5 Toledo 6 11 innings
Chris Maples was the only Hen with 2 hits, one of them a triple. Chris Shelton singled and walked, while Timo Perez doubled and walked. Ryan Raburn had a hit and 2 walks. Yorman Bazardo allowed 4 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. After Cory Hamman allowed 1 run in 1 2/3 innings, the rest of the pen (Preston Larrison, Vic Darensbourg, Aquilino Lopez, and Jeremy Johnson) combined for 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

Erie 5 Harrisburg 4
Matt Joyce doubled and homered for the Seawolves. Mike Hollimon added 2 hits. Eddie Bonine pitched 8 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with a 3/1 K:BB ratio.

Lakeland 4 Vero Beach 15
Ryan Roberson collected his 9th homer, one of his 3 hits on the night. Cameron Maybin added a couple of singles. While the batting average and obp remain high for Maybin, he hasn’t been getting extra base hits and his slugging is down to 487. Still a respectable number for sure, but off the lofty heights of earlier in the year. Elezar Aponte was rocked to the tune of 10 runs on 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings.

West Michigan 2 Beloit 8
Deik Scram had 3 of the Cap 5 hits in this one. Jeramy Laster hit his 3rd homer to plate one of the 2 runs. Lauren Gagnier allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, 4 K’s, and 3 walks over 6 innings.

Kenny on the Mend?

One of the more encouraging things I saw at Sunday’s game took place before the game even started. I saw Kenny Rogers throwing long toss for about 15 minutes. He was throwing from the gate of the visitors bullpen to the left field foul line. In a game he’s starting, he’ll actually warm up by throwing a little farther than that. Still, it looks like a guy who is much closer to pitching than he is to surgery.

The positive prognosis was also iterated by Danny Knobler on WDFN Monday afternoon. Knobler said that in a conversation on Friday, Rogers told Knobler that he would be disappointed if he wasn’t back in a month.

Right now, and barring set backs, it looks like the worst case scenario is that Rogers will be back in the rotation in another 6 weeks or so. That would put him at right about where his scheduled rehab would land him. But it seems like he’s even ahead of that.

What this really means is that the Tigers bullpen should receive a boost. Ideally Rogers assumes Chad Durbin’s spot in the rotation. After a couple shaky outings, Durbin has been decent. Certainly suitable as a 6th starter to say the least. If he can avoid a big slide in his next half dozen starts, he’ll most likely retain a roster spot and slide to the bullpen.

Like relievers Jason Grilli and Wil Ledezma, Durbin is out of options and has to clear waivers before returning to the minors. I’m all for retaining as much talent as possible in the organization, and roster status should be a factor in these decisions. But the middle of the bullpen has struggled and they need better results. Swapping out Durbin for a struggling reliever could provide a boost.

Now this is all premature because Rogers isn’t even pitching yet. Durbin could struggle. The bullpen could find their stride. But the pen could receive a boost in the form of the disabled list.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/20/07

Charlotte 3 Toledo 9
Timo Perez was a triple short of the cycle. Ramon Santiago added 3 hits and Chris Shelton had 2. Dennis Tankersley allowed 2 runs on 8 hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Akron 1 Erie 2 10 innings
Jeff Laris homered and singled, and that was half the offense. Mike Hollimon walked, but posted an 0 for 3 and has seen his batting average slide to .244. He’s still posting a 378 OBP though. Eulogio De La Cruz continues to work on his Minor League Pitcher of the Month honors. This time it was an 8 inning effort allowing 1 run on 5 hits, 1 walks, and 6 K’s.

Lakeland 2 Vero Beach 6
Cameron Maybin had 2 of the 3 Lakeland hits. Justin Justice returned to the lineup from whatever it was that kept him out of it for the last week, and walked twice. Lucas French allowed 6 runs on 9 h its over 5 innings.

West Michigan 2 Quad Cities 3
Gorkys Hernandez doubled and singled. Brennan Boesch added 2 hits as well. Jonah Nickerson allowed 3 runs on 8 hits on 5 innings. Randor Bierd pitched 3 innings and allowed only 1 hit while fanning 4. Bierd is trying to come back from an injury sustained in 2005. He was hit hard at Oneonta last year, but lately he’s been pitching well. In his last 10 appearances he’s amassed 14 innings and only 3 runs with a 19:3 K:BB ratio.

Game 43: Cardinals at Tigers

PREGAME: The Tigers will go for the sweep today against the Cardinals. With it being a day game after a night game, and an off day tomorrow, and the series already won, I’m expecting to see the B lineup today.

The Tigers will send out an A pitcher though with Justin Verlander taking the hill. Verlander is coming off his best start of the season, a 2 run 7 inning performance against the Red Sox.

The Cardinals will again turn to their bullpen in search of a starter. This time it will be Brad Thompson making his 4th career start, and 3rd of the season. Thompson posts a solid 4.03 ERA. But, he has a below average strikeout rate (4.7 per 9), an average walk rate (2.7 per 9), and he’s allowing more than a hit an inning. The most glaring item on the stat sheet though is 7 homers in 29 innings. Luckily for Thompson 6 of the 7 have been solo shots.
