Game 63: Brewers at Tigers

PREGAME: Sixty-two down, one hundred to go. As quick as this season is zipping along, there is still a lot of baseball left to play. The last 100 starts with a home tilt against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers just never feel quite like an interleague game, probably due to all the times the Tigers played Cecil Cooper, Robin Yount, and Ben Oglivie in the 80’s.

But tonight the Tigers and Justin Verlander will take on Jeff Suppan.

Suppan has been pretty bad his last half dozen starts with a 5.59 ERA and he’s allowed 8 homers, 18 walks, and only 13 strikeouts.

Verlander is coming off of 7 innings of shut out ball in Texas. Prior to that was his shellacking against the Indians. So there isn’t really a trend here, but on the whole Verlander has a 3.12 ERA for the season so there’s been more good than bad.

In Baseball Prospectus today there was an article about wasted at-bats, or ABs by sub-replacement-level players. The Tigers have the smallest percentage of such at-bats on the season with only 4.2%. All those belong to Neifi Perez. I bring this up because he’s starting tonight for Carlos Guillen who is still hampered by his hamstring issue. Perez is 6 for 18 lifetime off of Suppan.

  1. I wondered if anyone else was watching this game, but I’m not gonna say much else.

  2. Great game so far, I hope Verlander pitches for the Tigers for the nex 19 years.

    Steve

  3. Does anyone remember the old light blue PJ’s the Brewers wore a few years back?

  4. Rod just mentioned that Sunday squeeze play again. He really enjoyed that!
    Isn’t Verlander unbelievable….

  5. They shouldn’t boo. Only an idiot would pitch to Maggs instead of Casey here.

  6. And the patented GB to second. It’s incredible that we have the highest scoring offense in baseball with 0 HRs and a .347 SLG.

  7. Where’s the guy that said he had a hammer just in case Brandon needs another broken toe later on? Brandon’s on fire.

  8. good news! Polanco is at #1 in the AL 2B voting! And I haven’t gotten around to online voting for him yet (I did at the park).

The Inge haters are quiet these days…

  9. Yes Walewander I do!

Kathy that comment about Inge is hilarious.

And I’m not saying anything else about this game.

  10. Hello all! I just thought I’d join you in not saying anything. Keeping silent by myself has proven to be too difficult.

  11. Sorry about the delay… big grain of salt (this from a CDN clolumnist who is king of the misleading rumour, but even a stopped clock is right twice a day, right?)

Maroth to the Rangers for Eric Gagne.

  12. Noooooooooooooooooooooooo hitterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I was excited just watching the gamecast on ESPN.

  13. WOW!!!! That is so frikken awesome!! Verlander is the BEST!!!!

    Incredible.

  14. ————–standing ovation—————

Those were nasty, nasty pitches. There was no stopping him. Great job Justin!

  15. It was great watching this with my nine year old. It was the first no no I have watched the whole game on, let alone a Tiger game. Wll there goes being at work on time. Too wound up. Both of us are……

    Steve

  16. Oh The Tigs are the best!! Im in AZ studying for the bar exam, and I might just wear my Tigers hat for a long time. I am so phuckin proud to be a Tigers fan.

  17. Adam, Crying releases an anti depresent into your blood. You should be feeling good now

  18. You can thank me for this. I work downtown and almost went to the game but I was tired from being at a concert last night so I decided to come home and watch on TV. It never woulda happened if I had been sitting right there! I’m crying too, Adam. This just rocks.

  19. It’s always great to be a Tigers’ fan, but man, oh man, tonight was great. Congratulations Justin!!

  20. what a thing of beauty verlander put on a clinic out there tonight and the indians lost to fla. tied for 1st baby

  21. Maggs’ hit to go to the world series was great, but oh my god, the emotion of a no hitter blew by it.

  22. @ Ben – Yeah, I got it on. Thanks. I was trying to stay away from here, didn’t want to jinx it, haha.

  23. I didn’t want to say anything before, but ESPN News was highlighting the interleague matchups, such as Atlanta/Minn, and they showed the Twins’ WS Gm 7 win celebration. The most prominent celebrator? Jack Morris. I took it as a sign.

  24. Does anyone know who will be starting for us Friday and Saturday against the Phillies? I’m going to both those games.

  25. I’m flying in for those games in Philly too. I was excited before, sure, but now even more so.

  26. WOW!!!!!!! Justin deserved that…he was unhittable..literally and figurativley tonight…he is that good and is the real deal…GREAT win tonight all around….best team in baseball

  27. I too was overcome with emotion. I tear up at big sporting events that are wrought with emotion. Great stuff to see. I would LOVE to play for Jim Leyland if I was a ballplayer.

  28. Yeah, my family lives out there but I go to school in Pittsburgh so I’m driving back. Anyone know? I think I’m just going to miss Verlander…. damn it.

  29. I’ll be flying in to see the boys on the 4th against the indians. If I worked it out right it’ll be Mr. No-No pitching. I’ll be there for the game on the 5th as well.

  30. Great game! First Tigers no-hitter since Billy Chapel against the Yankees in 1999!

  31. I’m at a loss for words right now. I’m sick, and planned on going to bed early tonight and skipping the end of the game. So much for that. I still have chills, or maybe it’s a fever.

  32. Drew Sharp is on ESPN right now, it sounds like he’s still shaken up. What a great event to be a part of.

  33. i’m at a loss for words. seriously, even after the alcs win i wasn’t this emotional. if there was one pitcher on the staff i would want to throw a no-no, it would be justin. amazing.

  34. I loved seeing Kenny Rogers standing next to Andrew Miller during the 9th. Gather that wisdom, young Andrew.

And that whole no-hitter thing was kind of cool. I’m happy that I was able to see some of it on ESPN. Wish I’d been at the park. I hope we can get some comments about the atmosphere at Comerica from people who were there. Those pitches were absolutely nasty. The brewers didn’t have a chance.

  35. i’m at a loss for words right now. even after the alcs i wasn’t this emotional. if there was one pitcher on the staff i could choose to throw a no-no, it would be justin. truly amazing.

  36. The defense behind him was fabulous. Please, no more hating on Neifi and Maggs lousy fielding. They were just great!!!

  37. As you watch the highlights or game again later, watch Pudge hum the ball to 1B/3B after every K. Think he was stoked?

  38. First no-hitter at Comerica and I was there!!! After the top of the fifth I told my husband and son “look at Milwaukee’s line score”. My husband was thinking the same thing, but I had to point out to my son that they had no hits. The tension and excitement just kept building from there, every strike–not just strike out, but every single strike–had the crowd yelling and cheering. The ninth inning I didn’t see one person in his seat-everyone was on their feet screaming for the last out. That last out, by the way, almost made me wet my pants. From our seats in the RF grandstand it looked like it was coming right at us, with enough distance. I couldn’t see Maggs get into position to make the catch and only knew it was an out when the crowd went crazy.

And speaking of Maggs, wow that sliding catch in the 7th saved the no-hitter for Verlander. Plenty of chants of “MVP after that.

And Neifi “Secret Weapon” Perez. Wow, who knew? 🙂

  39. Anne that must’ve been something. Thanks for filling us in on the ballpark experience. This is just too tremendous! I’m still hyped beyond belief!

  40. AND Cleveland lost, we’re now tied in first place. Could this get any sweeter? I am so giddy in love with the Tigers right now I can’t think straight.

  41. Not to take away from Justin, but Inge(my tiger) hit a homerun,a single ,and a walk!

  42. Anne – congrats for being there and thanks for the great story.

Billfer – feel better soon. I bet tonight will help with that.

  43. I love this team; from Inge and Perez to Bonderman and no no Verlander and everyone in between. Man, what a great bunch of players!!

  44. Same story here, Anne. Happened to go to tonight’s game–only the second game I’ve been to at Comerica this year. After the top of the 5th, I turned to my wife and said, “Verlander’s half way to a no hitter.”

I told my six-year old son after the game, “You’ll be telling your grandchildren about this when you’re 70.” Not sure he processed that one.

And this while wearing a Justin Verlander name/number t-shirt my sons gave me as an early Father’s Day gift.

    What a night.

  45. My favorite part of this was going to MLB.com after the seventh and reading the headline: “Justin case you hadn’t noticed, No No in progress.”

No, that’s a lie. I think I screamed my lungs out when Neifi made that play.

I really can’t dislike the guy anymore. He’s a Tiger.

  46. Pingback: six second abs
  47. Hah, I’m writing this right now because it is September 21, and I’m bummed about the Tigers… and wanted to get cheered up.

    Mission Accomplished.
