Two roster-ish type notes. First, Neifi Perez was suspended 80 games for another positive test of a banned stimulant. You think this is what Leyland meant when he said that Perez “brought a lot of energy” to the team. Let’s hope he kept it to himself.
Also, Zach Miner has returned from his bereavement leave and Jose Capellan was optioned out to make room for him. Capellan has had a tender elbow, so he didn’t really contribute much in the last week.
Timely that Zach is back because the Tigers will be without Chad Durbin who is with his wife and new baby.
this Neifi news just totally made my Friday. How hilariously inept he is.
WOW……I was SHOCKED when I saw that. Does anybody have any idea what he’s taking? Is it greenies or something else? He just essentially ended his big league career today I believe.
LOL
Why continue to take the stuff if you couldn’t get much worse, if you’ve already been CAUGHT 2x and somehow are still on the 25-man-roster of a great team?
We knew he couldn’t play baseball, now we know he can’t think to save his career.
Lets sweep the Sox outta town.
It makes me wonder how long the team has know about Neifi’s second suspension. I guess it makes the possible deal for Wilson more (but still nowhere close to) rational.
The end of an era. Kind of sad, for as bad as Neifi was, he at least provided some entertainment value on this site. I know I had a great time reading the comments about his performance (or lack of) last season.
The Neifi Perez era ends. Is there a Jack Wilson era on the horizon?
oh man, what a waste of money to bring this moron to the Tigers. Was this the worst trade ever by a Tigers GM?
thank god, he will never wear the olde english D again.
Depends what Chris Robinson does for the Cubbies.
Right now hes what around 23? still very young and hit well the year before.
This year not so much – http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Chris%20Robinson&pos=&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=460101
Still Neifi is probably the worst player ever to win a GG or play on the Tigers that I have seen.
Can we please cut Neifi now?
Why cut him? If they cut him they have to pay the rest of his salary. If they leave him suspended without pay, they don’t pay him and he doesn’t play. The best of both worlds.
Thank you Neifi, now the Tigs don’t have to waste any more money on you, your last act was your best! Bravo.
Chris in Nashville: Just snooping around, it seems the drug policy is divided into 3 groups: performance enhancing, drugs of abuse, and amphetimines. The gossip was that he tested positive for ephedrine the last time, but I don’t know what it was this time. It seems you have to test positive for the same class of drug consecutive times for the longer suspension.
The Neifi Perez era hasn’t ended – it’s just taken an 80-game hiatus!
How does this affect his HOF status?
Neifi’s response to the suspension:

Kathy, that’s interesting, thanks. ADHD would explain a lot I guess. But I still don’t get why any player who knows about the testing would just use something else without going thru channels.
these jack wilson rumors just won’t go away…i know they are ridiculous but if we are still hearing them in a week or so there may be more to it than we hoped…THAT would be the worst trade even worse than neifi.
the following was posted on MLBTR this morning…
Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson has a six-team limited no-trade clause, but he recently let the team know that he’ll waive it for any deal. Apparently he just wants out of Pittsburgh. Dejan Kovacevic isn’t sure if the team has placed him on waivers yet. But I’m sure they will and he should get through unclaimed. As far as I’ve read, almost every player in baseball is put on waivers in August just to mask those that the team is actually trying to trade. There’s no risk to this because you can pull a player back if he’s claimed.
Kovacevic says talks with the Tigers about Wilson are still ongoing. Bucco Blog had heard that Jair Jurrjens and Brent Clevlen were involved also.

I know everyone seems to be mortified about Jack Wilson, but he did make the All Star team, I believe in ’04, and his manager was Lloyd McClendon. He’s ranked 4th in the NL defensively and has an average BA. While I don’t think he worth the millions he’s paid he seems to solid defensively. If they could get rid of Monroe and a few other things put into this package, then I think it’s OK. We pay CMO almost 5 million and who’s gonna take him, but hopefully, the Pirates.
Kyle Davies really stunk up joint at Yankee Stadium pushing his career era to about 6.20. Dayton Moore, baseball genius.
Kathy –
That was in 2004 and he’s been one of the worst regulars in the majors since then. He’s past his prime, so it’s not like he’s going to get better, and in fact 2004 was the only year he wasn’t below average offensively.
Looking at more advanced defensive metrics like PMR, he was on par with Carlos Guillen last year. This year with UZR he is barely above average. Plus he’s owed a ton of money. This really would be a disastorous move.
