Toledo 6 Charlotte 5
Dontrelle Willis made a rehab start and he struggled. He walked 3 and allowed 7 hits in 5.2 innings including 2 homers. He threw 46 of his 79 pitches for strikes. Mike Hessman and Jeff Larish homered again, and Mike Hollimon joined in on the fun.
Erie DNP
Lakeland 6 Tampa 2 11 innings
Mike Bertram had two hits. Duane Below fanned 10 in 7.1 innings while walking one and allowing 2 runs.
West Michigan 1 Fort Wayne 2
Kyle Peter had 2 hits. Lauren Gagnier went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, no walks, and 7 K’s.
Sounds like Mr. Willis should stay put for a while.
Sounds like one more rehab start for Dontrelle…I hope?
I was lucky enough to be at the game, and Dontrelle got lucky. Charlotte tried a double-steal in the 5th with one out, and Dontrelle picked off the runner taking 3rd, and drove the runner trying to take 2nd back to 1st. He was also struggling on staying ahead of hitters in the count.
I get the feeling that Dontrelle’s career as an effective pitcher is just about over. What a shame. Not only did we lose a prospect for this– who has struggled this season but now seams to have turned a corner– the retarded Dave Dombrowski felt compelled to “lock-up” Willis with a big & expensive multiyear contract. And like Nate Robertson, this team is compelled to put him in the rotation in order to chase after sunk cost. This is much like the Barry Zito situation, but with two dud pictures instead of one.
This is turning out to be a nightmare of a season where every single off-season move is a disaster.
hessman on fire!
Funny comment from a reader at the Free Press –
“What chu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?”
Well, it made me laugh anyway (for you younger folks go watch an episode of Different Strokes and you’ll get it).
