The Tigers announced a bevy of roster moves in conjunction with the September 1st roster expansion. Prior to Tuesday’s game the Tigers will recall Jeremy Bonderman, Wilkin Ramirez, Dusty Ryan, Eddie Bonine, and Casey Fien. Also Brent Dlugach will have his contract purchased and Mike Hollimon will be be placed on the 60 day DL to clear a roster space and provide additional playoff roster flexibility. Armando Galarraga will be recalled on September 5th.

Is the thinking with Dlugach that he can play third base well enough to back up Inge, that he’s better than Everett right now, or that this is a situation where they can audition him for next year without losing much production? The Tigers seem to only add guys who are going to play down the stretch, and I’m having more trouble figuring out the function of a third SS than the other five callups.
Am I correct in thinking that the lack of a Sizemore call up means that Polanco is likely going to be tendered a contract in the off season?
No Sizemore is pretty surprising. But why not call up Clay Rapada? He’s on the forty man roster already, he has decent numbers in AAA and he’s a lefty, I thought you could never have enough lefties?
Perhaps they want Sizemore to keep up the regular playing time. The guy has been smoking the ball in Toledo, why have him the ride the pine in the Majors for a month. I have a feeling he will be in the Majors next year.
I don’t know. One week of playing in Toledo vs. one month of workouts and the occasional appearance with the Tigers seems to be fairly obvious to me.
They still might call Sizemore up next week once Toledo’s season is officially over. But other than as a 4th or 5th PH, 3rd or 4th PR or 3rd defensive IF replacement he doesn’t have a role on the team. Either way don’t think that he still is not in their plans for next year.
I wonder where I got the idea in my head you could only have two players on the 60 day disabled list. This makes three for the Tigers (Zumaya and Treanor).
The EM doesn’t like a lot of extra players taking up bench space, which is the most likely reason for the small number of Sep 1 call-ups. They could still bring other guys up later, basically in the capacity of observers (watch and learn). A lot will depend on where the Tigers sit in relation to the division lead whether they get any playing time. Since they won’t be eligible for post season play anyway at that point it probably doesn’t matter that much from a practical standpoint. With little playing time available I don’t know how much useful evaluation by management is going to occur. As an example, Avila has been up for a while, and although the results are pretty encouraging with him, realistically the jury still has to be out there.
Well, Lynn Henning was 2 for 6 on callups. Good for a batter, not so good as a beat reporter.
What’s going on with Larish? He would seem to be a nice LH pinch hitter bat.
Wrist surgery. Done for the season.
Why isn’t Nate Bump on the playoff roster? He seemed to be the best starter for the Hens in the second half. He’s got a nice sinker and could come in and get timely double play ball in relief in the playoffs.
