It doesn’t seem that long ago that the Tigers were slogging through an excruciating West Coast trip. Well, this one isn’t quite as excruciating but it’s just as West Coast. Justin Verlander leads things off against Dallas Braden. A no hitter against a perfect game.
And no Magglio Ordonez tonight who has a heel problem, so of course his replacement Casper Wells is the logical replacement in the 3-hole.
Enjoy.
Let’s hope it is a low scoring game. With this lineup the Tigers should do their part.
Had a decent shot there in the first, but no go. We’ll give it another try in the third.
Love the hustle by Damon there.
The pitchers best friend. That should help keep JVs pitch count down.
NASTY.
69 pitches thru 6 innings for JV
Inge baby Inge.
And there’s the best .230 career hitter in baseball
And I was just about to post how Inge was hitting .197 since going 0-10 at the Home Run contest at the All-Star Game! Shame on me.
I heart Austin Jackson.
Casper!!
Hey Jimbo those youngsters can sometimes play the game!
Verlander is finally having an efficient game. Could this be Detroit’s first complete game of the year?
So, Binge for player of the day
How can it not be Verlander?
Another run Worthed in.
I vote for Worth! POD
just think we almost got a hit out of ALL of the BOBS today…except Everett played today! Still a big BOB day!
Love to see AJax with another multiple hit game.
Jose Valverde just gave my daughter a ball.
Very cool real time update.
Does it smell like a french fry?
Awesome efficiency by Verlander. He didn’t even break a sweat. He’d probably be good to go another 9 innings.
80 strikes and only 36 balls from JV tonight – like to see that.
He threw 85/40 in that 5 inning effort on 4/22 v. LAA that had everyone up in arms. Can we all just agree that the foul balls in that game were an absolute anomaly?
Since then – 35.2 IP, 5 ER, 19 hits, 12 BB, 32 K.
1.26 ERA, .87 WHIP, and 8.07 K/9.
Sick.
And I’ll take that lower K/9 rate if it means he can pitch deeper into games.
Those numbers are very Nolan Ryan worthy… That’s an interesting comparison to look at. Compare stats on those two; it’s creepy how similar they are.
Kevin, I agree with you there. Watching the game, it had a twilight-zone feel with all the foul-offs. But I have to believe he didn’t have his normal life on the fastball that night, or there’s no way there are that many fouls. They weren’t missing it, but they couldn’t quite catch up to it, either.
And yeah, those are some sick stats.
Great outing by the man! …Got tickets for all three Dodger games hope the good play can continue………
Nice, Jud. Let me know if your plans change and you can’t make a game. I could always drive over and buy them off you.
The A’s aren’t exactly the Yankees or the Decidedly-Un-Satanic Rays, but still that was pretty impressive.
Not sure I get the 9th inning though. If it was a shutout, yeah, go for it. But what was the point, really? To save Valverde for tomorrow afternoon. Why not throw Coke out there?
He was doing the awesome Verlander thing where his fastballs were getting a bit faster every inning…then in the 9th he threw one and the gun said 94 and I thought, uh-oh, the big guy’s getting tired…
I’m sure JV told Old Smokey he’s going out there to finish what he started. He deserved to have a shot at a complete game.
Coleman, I think when you have a pitcher like J.V., the presumption is that he gets to pitch until he’s gassed — which obviously, he wasn’t.
If that’s Battlestar, I’m sure someone else closes that one out.
So is this team likable yet?
Verlander was just an out machine last night. Nine innings, five baserunners = 0.55 WHIP for the night – works for me.
I’d like to see Bonderman follow up his strong outing against the Yankees last Wednesday (the bullpen collapsed in the ninth) with another good performance. I didn’t realize how dominant he was against the Yankees. His line (5/12/10):
IP 7.0 H 5 ER 2 BB 1 K 7 Strikes 71 Balls 28
I’m all for a few more helping of this.
