Game 2010.054: Tiger at Royals

The Tigers head into Kauffman Stadium to take on the Kansas City Royals. Max Scherzer is on the bump for Detroit and Bruce Chen takes the ball for the Royals.

Scherzer is of course coming off his strike-out-a-palooza against the A’s. His other best start of the year came against KC back in the first week of the season.

Bruce Chen is a career left hander. He’s made 11 appearances this year, but it is just his second start. He’s walked 10 batters in 13.1 innings but has a 2.70 ERA. Go figure.

  1. Bilfer, sorry, not trying to jump the train on this thread. But I wanted people to see this.
We should start a campaign that insures that Galarraga is the fan’s choice for the all-star game. Yes, I am the very one who decried Inge being selected this way last year. Yes, I know he doesn’t deserve it based on stats.
    Screw it.
Galarraga deserves to be in that stadium and receive a standing ovation from 50,000 fans. He handled the whole thing with a dignity and class that most of us, particularly me, would lack if in his cleats.
The rosters have been expanded, this hurts no one. But it would close the circle in a good kind of way.
    Let us make it so.

  2. Actually Stephen, it’s much simpler than getting Inge into the All-Star game; all you have to do is convince 1 person of the idea, he-who-chooses-the-pitching staff. He names Galarraga to the staff, and that’s that. Simple. Of course it would never happen…

  3. Of course that would set a bad precedent, and anyone who threw a perfect or shoulda been perfect game would expect an automatic All-Star spot, which would lead to at least 1or 2 totally undeserving appearances every 50 years or so. Bud Selig would probably rescind the nomination for that very reason.

  4. Vince: you may not have noticed amidst all the offense yesterday, but Raburn had an RBI, so he’s good for June.

  5. In other news, we’re having another Inge eclipse defined as when his mediocre season numbers perfectly intersect with his mediocre career numbers. Watch out, anything can happen during an Inge eclipse.

  6. Strangely enough, as much as I ridicule the idea of a player being “due,” with Inge it almost works. His career .235ish isn’t achieved by being a .235 hitter type, it’s achieved by stretches of hopelessness filled with weak strikeouts, followed by productive outbursts full of timely hits.

So I guess when he is at that eclipse point, almost anything can happen, there’s no way of knowing if he’s Ingeing or Bingeing, it’s a vacuum (which Nature, apparently, abhors).

  7. in the commararison of how KC plays everyone else they basically own the Tigers

    1. It’s because they have 5 or 6 pitchers who will be tied for the Cy Young award (at least based on their performance vs DET).

By the way, since I commented on how stressful it must be to be Inge with runners on base and to know if you fail, well there’s always Laird and Everett: I have to commend Brennan Boesch, because: Raburn-Inge-Laird-Everett.

      1. are you saying Boesch will not lead the league in runs scored batting in the 5th spot?

        1. I wouldn’t say that, because, Double, Steal of 3rd, then, um…wild pitch or something…OK, probably he won’t…

  8. Baltimore fired their manager, which isn’t really surprising. Because if your manager is Trembley, it makes the players nervous also.

  9. Laird and Everett at the bottom of the order is just like having two pitchers hitting.

  10. This must be one of those “give away” games that Jimmy is known for. How else to explain batters 6-9? It also looks like Scherzer needs to return to Toledo to work on his “arm slot.”

  11. KC puts up 8 batters above .255 the Tigers put up 4 batters under .235….I guess now a days it isn’t to much to expect your players to hit above .255 if KC and Oakland and the Dodgers can all do it

  12. Just when things are looking quite bleak, you look and Farnsworth is warming up in the bullpen…ahhh…

  13. C’mon Boesch – Raburn, Inge, Laird, Everett: I’m just saying a hit here would be huge

    1. Thanks Brennan!

Now we won’t get all RILED up

      [Raburn
      Inge
      Laird
      Everett]

  14. I guess $$$$ must off set the Pride factor because if you are Laird or Everett how can you submit yourself to out after out after out after……..

    1. Maybe it’s Perry’s turn to take a spin through Toledo, it seems to work wonders…

  15. Is it time for Perry to visit Toledo?

Can someone post his last few outings? Can’t be good.

    1. Including tonight, his last four outings have a total of 2-1/3 innings, 10 hits, 9 earned runs, 1 K and 2 walks.

    1. Must be his arm slot. Speaking of arm slot, it looks like Scherzer has lost his again.

    1. Let’s put it this way, even KC isn’t nervous about that trio. This was a very winnable game. Gotta question the decision to put Perry into this one.

    2. surely you jest… i was thinking along those same sarcastic lines – the ‘bad news’ is Boesch struck out, the ‘good news’ Raburn, Inge, Laird and Everett coming up in the 8th… it kinda hurts just to type those four names in the same sentence, no wonder JL is so cranky… having to fill out that bottom of the line-up card every night.

There are some poor hitting teams out there this year, but i challenge anyone to show me a worse 6-9 than the Tiger’s fielded tonight (and most nights)… feel free to include the Nat’l league and their pitcher.

  16. Leyland being the Master of the Bullpen tonight. Which two pitchers does he bring in for the 8th.

  17. Santiago and his stick in the game instead of Guillen?? Even JL knows this one is done. The Tigers braintrust better find a way to improve 6-9 or they can forget about games being meaningful after the Allstar break. If last year taught us anything it taught us that you need production from the back half of the line up — something better than 4 guys praying to finish the year at or neat .200.

  18. Does Guillen have the day off? If so, then Everett gets to lead off the 9th – excellent.

    1. Guillen had a bruised toe, which what he was lifted for in the game Thursday. Not because of the errors. He had a day off to rest.

  19. A’s…Royals…this schedule has been brutal, I can’t wait to get back to playing the AL East

  20. 1 for 14 BOBS story of the season….DD do you ever check the box scores there is a pattern here
