Game 2011.34: Tigers at Blue Jays

There wasn’t a single thing that I liked about yesterday’s loss to the Blue Jays.

Least not the single thing where the Blue Jays hit single after single after single after single.

Today Justin Verlander will take the mound with a “single THIS” demeanor.  Which former Tiger great Jack Morris suggests may be a bit overdone–Morris says that Verlander could 1, 2, or 3-hit teams all of the time if he were less intent on the strikeout.

Oh, and it’s May!  Justin Verlander, career in March/April:  9-14, 4.75.  Career in May: 18-8, 2.80.

Morris will be opposed by Ricky Romero, whose start was pushed back because of a mild oblique strain.  I’m guessing he will have a short pitch-count leash.  Do you get my point, you first-pitch swingers? Word is there will be no Bautista again, but that he will be back by the end of the series.

Today’s Player of the Pre-Game:  Daniel Schlereth

Apparently Schlereth, who was born in Anchorage, likes to call himself The Alaskan Assassin.  His mission today, if called on, is to shut down the Toronto Singlers; if not called on, to trademark his nickname before a certain Presidential candidate steals it.

    Awesome job everybody.

    Verlander was great throwing 100mph in that last at-bat.

    Only thing that bothered me was the Jays’ announcers talking about Verlander being the last Tiger to throw a no-hitter. I felt bad for Galarraga and his 28-out perfect game. No, I’m not over it…

  5. Missed the game ;-(. Just got home and saw the box. What Jack Morris said!

  6. Verlander didn’t pitch any differently, it’s just that instead of pitches being fouled off, they were hit weakly into the field (except on the 13-pitch walk). If you look at the speed and location, they were the same pitches and the same style he always uses.

  7. Rushed out of the ceremony and caught the 9th on At-Bat. If anyone has a link to the battle in the 8th that led to a walk, please post it here.

      Today he was tied for his LOWEST strikeout total of the season, 4K in 9 inning (Apr 16 he had 4K in 6 innings). Also, it was his lowest pitch count of the season, 108.

I followed the game on MLB at bat, so I may have missed the reaction to this – but, what was Farrell doing changing his pitcher with two outs in the top of the ninth of a game his team was down 9 and being no hit? I think I would have been upset about it even if Verlander didn’t have a no hitter going.

  10. I was at the game, Perfect day for a game. The dome was open and it was a perfect 62 and sunny all day long. We were pretty close to JV when he got the ice bath. If you got to MLB and watch the interview, the guy interviewing him (not Rod) still had ice on his head during the interview.

    My son and I were pretty Psyched we saw a no hitter together. We are ordering a Picture of JV and putting out stubs and a box score in there.

    A lot of Tiger fans in my section and yelling wildly in the 9th. I can say its disappointing that the park was so empty. Toronto is a great city and has a really nice ball park in a really easy to get to, cultural area.
