PPD Until June 13: Rays at Tigers

The Tigers have the brooms and the tarps handy, as they look to sweep the 3-game series with the Rays, weather permitting.  Last night the Tigers pulled off the rare feat of overcoming both a subpar performance by Justin Verlander and a Tiger Clown Show.

This afternoon manning the broom is Bad Brad Penny, who is looking to overcome a subpar performance of his own, as his 5 walks led to 5 Pittsburgh runs.  He will be faced by Andy Sonnanstine, who has transitioned from the bullpen, but is yet to make it past the 5th inning of any game.  That and the fact that the Rays’ bullpen has been well-used this series bodes well for Brutus’ chances to wield the broom.

On a side note, reading a Rays blog it is clear that Rays fans really, really don’t like Kelly Shoppach.  Laird was a fan favorite last season by comparison.  Shoppach’s failure to block Boesch from scoring was seen as the main cause of the first loss in the series, and when he was later hit by a pitch one fan said, “good, he needs to get hit with a pitch every at bat for the rest of the season.”  Ouch.

Today’s Player of the Pre-Game: Alex Avila

Alex was the hero in last night’s game, and gets another RHP to jump on today.  And he is not Gerald Laird or Kelly Shoppach.

Today’s Back-to-Back Kelly Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Don Kelly 3B
  3. Brennan Boesch RF
  4. Miguel Cabrera 1B
  5. Victor Martinez DH
  6. Andy Dirks LF
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS

Toledo 2, Pawtucket 3 (Red Sox)

After Matt Hoffman (LHP) blew a save opportunity, Lester Oliveros (RHP) took the loss when he allowed an ER in the top of the 10th inning. Andy Oliver started and threw 2+ innings. He gave up an ER on 4 hits.

Will Rhymes (DH) lead the ‘Hens with a 3-5 night including an RBI. Ryan Strieby (1B) had the other RBI and went 2-5. Ben Guez (RF) went 1-4. Since his promotion from Erie, Guez is hitting .353 in 51 ABs.

Erie 1, Richmond 5 (Giants)

LJ Gagnier (RHP) started for the SeaWolves and was the losing pitcher. Here’s his line: 6.1 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. Cory Hamilton (RHP) didn’t allow a run in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Brandon Douglas (2B) went 1-3 with a  walk and a run scored. Bishop and Pounds had 2 hits each. Bryan Holaday (C) had the ‘Wolves only RBI on 1-4 from the plate.

Lakeland 0, Bradenton 9 (Pirates)

Trevor “Mr.” Feeney (RHP) got beat around big time as the Lakeland starter. In a losing effort he allowed 9 hits, 8 ER, and 2 walks in 4 innings. A platoon of relievers held Bradenton to one more ER over 5 innings.

Not only was their starter hit around, the Lakeland offense also took the night off as they were two-hit by Bradenton pitching. Corey Jones (2B) had the most productive night as he went 1-2 with a walk. Daniel Fields (CF) went 0-4 with 3 K’s.

West Michigan 2, Bowling Green 10 (Rays)

In another example of bad starting pitching, Josue Carreno (RHP) made it through just one inning as the West Michigan starter. He allowed 6 ER on 5 hits and 2 walks. Patrick Cooper (RHP) had the only good night on the slab: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.

Ryan “Green Eggs &” Hamme (RF) put together a solid evening of offense: 2-3, 2 runs, 1 HR, 1 RBI, and a walk. Gulliver, J (2B) had the other RBI for the caps. Hernan Perez (SS) continued his sizzling year going 2-5 with a double. His average remains an impressive .340.

Game 2011.48: Rays at Tigers

Detroit is off to a new streak, winning their 2nd consecutive yesterday vs. Tampa Bay, 6-3.  Although who could have predicted how the win would come about:  Phil Coke with 4 great innings, Phil Coke with a hurt ankle (what is it with Tiger ankles anyway?), Charlie Furbush dominating in his first MLB appearance, Andy Dirks with his first career HR, Brennan Boesch diving around Shoppach at the plate, and all sorts of 9th-inning roller coaster excitement.

Update:  Phil Coke has been placed on the 15-day DL with a bone bruise in his right foot, and Adam Wilk has been called up from Toledo to take his roster spot, although presumably to join the bullpen.  The plan is to call up Andy Oliver to take Coke’s next turn in the rotation according to Jason Beck.

Today looks to be the more standard fare, with ace Justin Verlander taking the mound against Wade Davis.  Justin is looking to rebound from a merely good performance, and get back to his how-are-we-supposed-to-hit-that? ways.  Tampa Bay is notoriously better against RHP than they are against LHP, so he has a bit more work to do than Cokebush did last night.

This will also mean the Rays starting lineup will feature hot-hitting former Tiger Matt Joyce, savior of kittens.

Today’s Player of the Pre-Game:  Andy Dirks

With another RHP in the lineup, and batting behind Victor Martinez, Dirks will be the man on-the-spot with runners on base.

Today’s Where Hasn’t Kelly Batted Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Don Kelly 3B
  3. Brennan Boesch RF
  4. Miguel Cabrera 1B
  5. Victor Martinez DH
  6. Andy Dirks LF
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Scott Sizemore 2B

Toledo 2, Pawtucket 12 (Red Sox)

Surprisingly, this game was 3-2 heading into the 9th inning.  In the top half of the 9th, Toledo relievers Ortega and Weinhardt, combined to give up 9 ER on 8 hits and 2 walks. Starter Duane Below (LHP) wound up with the loss despite a quality outing: 8 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.

Omir Santos (C) led the way with the bat: 2-3, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI. Danny Worth (3B) went 2-4 and Timo Perez (LF) had the other RBI.

Erie 6, Richmond 3 (Giants)

Casey Crosby (LHP) improved to 2-2 on the year after earning the win. Crosby pitched 6 innings and gave up 7 hits, 1 ER, and 3 walks while striking out 5. His ERA for the year is a respectable 3.46. Jared Gayhart (RHP) had a poor outing in relief: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.  Rob Waite (RHP) got his first save of the year after a scoreless 9th.

New acquisition, Adam Calderone (RF) went 2-4 with an RBI. Despite recording 6 total runs, Rawley Bishop (1B) had the only other RBI for the ‘Wolves.

Lakeland 5, Bradenton 2 (Pirates)

After trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 8th, Lakeland put up a Rod Allen crooked number “5” and held “Dallas” Bradenton scoreless in the 9th for the win. Even though he wound up with no decision, Victor Larez ( RHP) pitched well: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 B, 4 K. Tyler Stohr (RHP) earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings.

Julio Rodriguez drove in 2 and went 1-4 from the plate. Fields and Plagman got the 2 other RBI for the Flying Tigers. Notably, Daniel Fields (CF) went 2-4 with a double, triple, and run scored.

West Michigan 2, Fort Wayne 4 (Padres)

Dan Gentzler (RHP) blew a save opportunity in the 9th and caused this one to go into extras when Fort Wayne put up the difference in the top of the 10th. Gentzler took the loss after staying on into the 10th. Starter Antonio Cruz (LHP) looked good: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 B, 8 K.

PJ Polk (RHP) had a terrific night from the plate: 3-4, 1 run scored. Perez and Castellanos had an RBI each. Robert Brantly (DH) went 0-5 with a K.

Game 2011.47: Rays at Tigers

“No, no, no, no”

This was Jim Leyland’s response when asked if he considered leaving Porcello in the game yesterday.  He added, “To me, it’s a no-brainer,” Leyland said. “Your closer is supposed to be better than your starter after eight innings, in my opinion.”

As much as we are used to the no-brain style of management, it is strange that Leyland didn’t mention the only decent rationale for removing Porcello, using the pinch-hitter to try to add another run (you know, those things that we get 2 of per game).  At any rate, Leyland later decided to go all F-bomb about fan second guessing. Fun stuff.

Today is a homecoming of sorts:  The Tigers return home, and greeting them will be the Tampa Bay Rays, and some old friends:  the suddenly brilliant Matt Joyce, a reanimated Johnny Damon, and the Sobbing Barber himself, Kyle Farnsworth.

Making the start for the Rays will be the promising youngster Jeremy Hellickson.  And the Rays could use a bit of promise in their starting pitching lately.  Phil Coke will be going for Detroit, which, inasmuch as it keeps lefty Matt Joyce on the bench, is a promising thing right from the start.

About Coke:  his last start against Boston was perhaps the best of his career.  There had been rumors afloat after the demotion of Benoit that the solution was going to be Coke to the BP as the new 8th inning guy, and Andy Oliver up to join the starting rotation.  Coke made that very difficult with his last outing.  Is the un-demotion of Benoit back to the 8th inning role related to the continued presence of Coke in the starting rotation?

In other news, after placing Brad Thomas on the DL with an elbow that can’t pitch, the Tigers recalled Charlie Furbush, then followed that up by sending Brayan Villarreal to the Hens of Mud, and bringing up Enrique Gonzalez, because they missed having a guy who pitched like Brad Thomas.  I expect the Rreality Show to resume in time for the fall season, if not sooner.

Today’s Player of the Pre-Game:  Joaquin Benoit

After a 1-game demotion, it looks as though Benoit will be Joaquin to the mound in the 8th inning again.  Because…it’s a no-brainer.  Seeing the Rays reminds Benoit that he was actually really good last year, and he responds with a good outing.

Today’s Intraleague Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Scott Sizemore 2B
  3. Brennan Boesch RF
  4. Miguel Cabrera 1B
  5. Victor Martinez DH
  6. Andy Dirks LF
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Brandon Inge 3B

Minor League Wrap 5.21.2011

Toledo 5, Pawtucket 4 (Red Sox)

The Mud Hens walked-off after a sac fly from Ryan Strieby (1B) scored Danny Worth in the bottom of the 11th. Lester Oliveros (RHP) was the winning pitcher after he held Pawtucket scoreless through the 10th and 11th. He walked 2 and K’ed 3.

Scott Thorman (LF) went 1-4 with a homer and three RBI.

Erie 3, Bowie 2 (Orioles)

Erie also won in extra innings after they scored 1 in the top of the 12th and hung on for the victory. Jacob Turner (RHP) started and lasted 8 innings. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk while striking out 8. Chance Ruffin (RHP) was credited with the win after 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with 4 K’s.

Jamie Johnson (CF) went 3-6 with a run scored, a double, and a RBI. Audy Ciriaco (SS) had the only other RBI for the ‘Wolves.

Lakeland 2, Jupiter 4 (Marlins)

Lakeland fell behind 3-0 early and never caught up. Cole Nelson (LHP) took the loss after surrendering those three ER over 6 IP but K’ed 6. Michael Morrison (RHP) allowed the other ER after 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Ryan Soares (2B) went 2-4 with a  double and a RBI. Michael Rockett (OF) had the second RBI on a single.

West Michigan 7, Fort Wayne 9 (Padres)

Despite giving up 6 runs (5 earned) in 4 2/3 as the starter, Kyle Ryan (LHP) avoided taking the loss. Instead, Michael Torrealba (RHP) ate the “L” after allowing 3 unearned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.

James Robbins (1B) had a big night with the bat: 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI. Hernan Perez (2B) went 2-5 with 2 RBI and a double. Castillo, Castellanos, Moya, and Machado had 1 RBI apiece for the explosive White Caps offense.

Game 2011.45: Tigers at Pirates

Amazing what can happen in 7 days.  A week ago, the Tigers had won 7 in a row, were a season high 4 games over .500, and were leading the AL in runs scored.  Since then, the boys are 0-4, they’ve managed 6 runs in those 4 games, and are now 26 runs behind the Yankees.

Beyond the anemic offense, the bullpen has gone from terrible to catastrophic, allowing 10 ER in 4 2/3 IP over the last four games.  Help is on the way, as Charlie Furbush was recalled from Toledo today, with Brad Thomas going to the DL.  Furbush has been pretty darn good down there, posting a 2.91 ERA and striking out an international league leading 55 in 46 1/3 IP covering 8 starts.  I’m curious to see what his role will be.  Coke has certainly earned his spot in the rotation, but he’s sorely missed out of the pen.

Max Scherzer gets the ball today, on the heels of three fantastic starts where he allowed 2 ER over 20 innings.  At the plate, Max is a career .176 hitter with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in 68 career plate appearances.

Kevin Correia (core – A – ah) climbs the hill for the Pirates.  Correia has been in the bigs for 7 years, mostly as a spot starter until 2009 when he had a fine season with the Padres, towing a 3.91 ERA (3.81 FIP) over 33 starts and just under 200 IP.  He only pitched 145 innings last year (injury, I presume, but I practically had to look up where Pittsburgh is), and for 2011, he’s 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA and 1.25 WHIP (remember he’s facing a pitcher almost every 9 batters).   He doesn’t walk many (2011 2.06/9), nor strike out many (3.81/9) so let’s see if the Tigers can hit ’em where they ain’t.

I’ve got to get to a BBQ, someone please post the lineups when they are avail.

Let’s go Tigers!

Minor League Wrap 5.20.2011

Toledo 2, Charlotte 1 (White Sox)

Adam Wilk (LHP) improved his record to 3-4 with the win last night. In 7 2/3 IP he gave up 7 hits and 2 walks, but held Charlotte to only 1 run on a solo home run. He struck out 4. Brendan Wise (RHP) faced one batter and retired him. Enrique Gonzalez (RHP) got his 6th save of the year after pitching the 9th.

Ryan Strieby (1B) had the only RBI of the night for the ‘Hens after a solo homerun. Danny Worth (3B) went 2-4.

Erie 2, Bowie 6 (Orioles)

Bowie controlled this one from the start. Despite a two-run Erie rally in the 8th, the outcome was never in doubt. Luke Putkonen (RHP) became the losing pitcher after allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits and 3 walks over 5 IP. Hamilton and Waite combined to throw three scoreless innings. Putkonen dropped his record to 0-5 on the season.

Jamie Johnson (CF) and Bryan Pounds (3B) each went 2-4 and Pounds recorded the only RBI for the SeaWolves. Justin Henry (2B) went 0-1 but drew two walks and came around to score a run. In 98 ABs, Henry is hitting .357 with an OBP of .447.

Lakeland 4, Jupiter 1 (Marlins)

Jay Voss (LHP) started for the Flying Tigers and pitched 7 strong innings: 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. He got the win and improved his record to 3-0 on the year with a 3.21 ERA. Stohr and Kenny Faulk (LHP) combined to throw 2 scoreless innings. Faulk picked up his 9th save of the year.

Jordan Lennerton (DH) went 2-4 with an RBI. Brent Wyatt (LF) was 1-1 with a run scored, an RBI, and a walk.

Despite going 0-2, Corey Jones (2B) led Lakeland with 2 RBI (sac fly and force out).

West Michigan 1, Fort Wayne 8 (Padres)

Kevin Eichhorn (RHP) started for the ‘Caps and allowed 5 runs (3 earned) in 6 2/3 innings. Eichhorn struck out 5 without walking a batter. Nate Newman (RHP) gave up 3 more ER in 2/3 of an inning. Logan Hoch (LHP) looked good in relief: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB.

James Robbins (1B) had the only RBI for West Michigan after a solo homer in the 5th. Jeff Rowland (OF) went 2-4.

Game 2011.44: Tigers at Pirates

Just how important is this inter league series, you ask?  I mean, we all know that AL Central match-ups have a direct effect on the standings; and playing the Yankees and Red Sox allow the boys to see where they stack up against the best.  But, Pirates?

Well, this weekend series against the Bucs kicks off a 12 game span that could demonstrate that 2011 could be a banner year for the Tigers, or could mean that the season is virtually over.  An article in today’s WSJ (yes, the WSJ, I found it underneath my baseball card magazines and Good Housekeeping) states that since 1996, just 9% of teams with a losing record on June 1 wound up with 90 wins, and the average correlation between a team’s win percentage on June 1 and its final winning percentage is 0.76 (which is high).  Before Cleveland’s inexplicable rise, 90 wins would have been a good bet to win the Central, and it still may be, or at least to earn a Wild Card slot.  The Tigers thus have 12 days to keep treading above .500, or we can all count on Matt Stafford shoulder updates 24/7 in October.

Who are the Pittsburgh Pirates, you ask?  Well, they come in at 20-23, which isn’t bad considering they have failed to finish above .500 since 1992, and have not won more than 68 games in a season since 2004.  Jeff Karsten started out in the pen, but now makes his 7th start of the season for Pittsburgh.  The righty has a 3.62 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and average 6.99 K/9.  He’s been much better in 2011 than the rest of his career, perhaps due to the development of a two-seam fastball which he’s relying on more in 2011 than ever.  He’s been decent over his 7 starts, keeping Pittsburgh in the game by not allowing too many runs, but he’s only reached the 6th inning twice all season.

Brad Bad Penny takes the first awkward swings of the year for a Tigers pitcher, as he looks to stop the 3 game slide.  Penny was awesome last time out versus Kansas City, allowing only 5 hits with no walks and no runs over 8 innings.  Over his last five BBP is 4-1 with a 1.51 ERA and .93 WHIP.

Lineups to come.

Game 2011.43: Tigers at Red Sox

“I don’t recall any team ever winning a game without scoring a run.”

This is one thing we learned from yesterday’s game, courtesy of Stormin’ Norman.

For all of the hand-wringing over Leyland’s decision to go with Schlereth, and stay with him after he walked Crawford (not to mention the decision to lift Coke at 78 pitches after a short rain delay), the real story of the game was the failure to capitalize on 2 opportunities with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 out.  In fact, after a big recent surge, the offense has started sputtering a bit

A big reason for this has been the slump–yes, it’s time for the “S” word–of Miguel Cabrera.  Over the past 2 weeks, here are the numbers of Cabrera, and the much-maligned Inge:

.188 .372 .281 .653

.200 .314 .300 .614

Inge with a bit more hitting and power, Cabrera with more BBs…otherwise, almost identical. Yikes.

Tonight has all of the makings of another game where capitalizing on scoring opportunities will sort the winner from the loser, as the 2 hottest starting pitchers in the AL, Justin Verlander and Josh Beckett face off.  While Verlander has been nearly unhittable, literally, in his last 2 starts, Beckett has posted a 1.75 ERA for the season himself, so this will likely be good stuff for fans of the pitching duel.

Tonight also has the makings of another rain-delayed affair.  Weathermen are standing by.  Brandon Inge has the hockey gear ready.

One more thing we have learned:  it isn’t just here at DTW that clowns are unwelcome.  The anti-clown backlash has been sweeping the nation–even Ronald McDonald is not immune: Critics to McDonald’s: Stop the clowning

Today’s Player of the Pre-Game:  Miguel Cabrera

Was his double yesterday against the tough Buchholz a sign that he is emerging from his little “s” thing? In a game where one big hit could make the difference, we hope so.  Hit one for all of the classy Red Sox fans who were chanting “DUI” yesterday.

Today’s Mr. Dirks meets the Green Monster Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Scott Sizemore 2B
  3. Brennan Boesch RF
  4. Miguel Cabrera 1B
  5. Victor Martinez DH
  6. Andy Dirks LF
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Brandon Inge 3B

Minor League Wrap 5.18.2011

Toledo 7, Charlotte 10 (White Sox)

The Mud Hens blew a 7-1 lead after giving up 3 runs in the 6th and 6 in the 8th. In a starting role, Duane Below (LHP) gave up 4 ER over 6 IP. Below also struck out 6.

Robbie Weinhardt took the loss and allowed 4 ER over 1 inning of relief.

Scott Thorman (LF) and Ben Guez (RF) each homered.  Danny Worth went 2-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Timo Perez (DH) went 2-5 with a run scored, a double, and 2 RBI. In fact, every Mud Hen except St. Pierre and Strieby recorded a hit.

Lakeland 3, Jupiter 6 (Marlins)

This game remained tied at 3 from the 3rd inning to the 11th when Jupiter added 3 and held the lead for the win.

Victor Larex (RHP) received no decision: 5 IP, 11 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Samuels and Little combined to throw 5 scoreless innings.  Kenny Faulk took the loss after giving up 3 runs (2 earned) in the top of the 11th.

Garcia and Waytt each went 2-4 with a run scored. Daniel Fields (CF) and Corey Jones (2B) had the only RBIs of the night with 2 and 1, respectively.

West Michigan 6, Bowling Green 5 (Rays)

Antonio Cruz (LHP) was the winning pitcher after starting for the ‘caps: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R (3 earned), 4 BB, 3 K. Torrealba and Bruce Rondon (RHP) combined to close it out. Rondon recorded his 5th save of the year.

Luis Castillo (CF) led the way offensively: 2-5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Billy Nowlin (DH) went 1-4 with a HR and RBI. Machado and Robbins each added an RBI, Brantly drove in 2.
