Slimmed Down Miggy and Other News

Alex Avila is reporting that Miggy is “20-25” lbs lighter.  Can you tell (images)?

Tom Gage breaks down the 40 man here.  They are at 24 signed after yesterday.

Kate Upton is moonlighting as a spokesmodel for MLB2K12. See JV getting just a tip or two here.

Comerica is getting a face lift.  Look for lots of Prince Fielder slow jog shots on the new scoreboard.

And then there is Maggs.  He has made it known recently that he will only sign a major league deal for 2012, leading to speculation that his playing days may be over.  Freep reported a few days ago that if he doesn’t return to the bigs, he will take an ownership stake in the Caribes de Anzoátegui, a Venezuelan winter league team where he’s curiously been listed on the roster since 2004.

  1. “Alex Avila is reporting that Miggy is “20-25″ lbs lighter.”

Thus proving the Newtonian theory of conservation of weight in the universe (Inge has gained 20 lbs).

    1. I thought it was Lavosier (e.g. the experiment where burned solids change into a gas of same weight) but what do I know.

    1. What I found interesting in the story is that Inge went to Dombrowski (who relayed the request to Leyland), instead of approaching Smokey…hmmm…

      1. I always thought it was Illitch that Inge had incriminating evidence on, but maybe it is Dombrowski, after all…

  2. A few weeks ago I mentioned to my brother that perhaps Inge could move to 2nd base? I also debated whether to post such to the this Web Log. Perhaps Jim Leyland read my email as Inge is trying for such this Spring. Should be interesting to watch all of this.

  3. Inge’s defense at 3B is average at best now, he can’t hit a lick, and at 34 he will be trying to learn a position he has never played before. On the plus side, he is athletic and in the best shape of his career.

On LaRussa coming to camp, it has been suggested by some that he is going to be working with Inge on making the transition to 2B. This is a red herring in my view. The real reason is to work with his good friend Leyland on managing a baseball game.

LaRussa: “Jim, this is a statistic; it’s called OBP. The guys with high OBP should bat at the top of the order and the guys with low OBP should bat at the bottom of the order. Any questions so far?”
Leyland: “Well thanks Tony, but WTF is a sadistic?”

  4. Nah Vince….it’s a long season and what the Tigers start out with will be changed before the end of April. Good teams do such.

    A few more:

Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital. ~Aaron Levenstein

Awards mean a lot, but they don’t say it all. The people in baseball mean more to me than statistics. – Ernie Banks

    1. Despite the “going with what we have” line, I don’t think they are done tweaking the roster. The ST experiments with 3B, 2B and SP will be interesting to watch. And then there are always the potential unexpected events (drugs, injuries, etc.) lurking. The possibility of some surprise changes before the end of March aren’t out of the question. The Fielder deal, which was a huge surpise, convinces me that DD has as much flexibility as he could possibly want. Operating from a position of strength as far as the division goes doesn’t hurt either.

      1. Well said Vince. A quick review of my Season 2011 journal shows Leyland had 7 different line ups during the first 7 games. I expect similar in 2012.

        Happy Mardi Gras y’all,
