Well, the tone of what I planned on posting changed pretty significantly around the 8th inning on Sunday night, and the Tigers waggle into Wrigley after taking a series in Cinci. Short on time today, but a few notes:
– Don’t Ask Dotel to the DL with elbow inflammation, Putkonen back up.
– That makes 7 on the DL, right now. The Tigers have already used 40 players this season, which has DD scrambling to figure out 40 man roster rules.
– Valverde doesn’t throw a spitball, he just sweats a lot.
Papa Peralta is tonight’s player of the game, as he goes deep twice for each of his new twin girls, Gabriela and Laina.

I think the correct spelling for Peralta’s new twins is Ghabriela and Lhaina. Congrats!
The Cubs fired their hitting coach because they were not working pitchers enough and were far too aggressive. Wow. It seems Ron Washington in Texas thought the same thing…I didn’t know hitting coaches meant anything…according to every press person in Michigan. I just hope the 2nd time through the order we make Maholm throw a few strikes…That was an awful 1st time through the order. The guy threw each hitter one strike per at bat, and 1st pitch Delmon had the best at-bat of the game.
The reason the Tigers are having so much trouble this year, is they just spot people innings with poor at-bats… This guy has 5 K’s in 2 2/3 innings (his season high) and we had 2 walks and a 1 wild pitch ( 2nd of the 1st 3 innings)..That is the same as spotting a team a lead and deciding that you only want to hit for SOME of your innings. We do this every game, yet, we are only a couple of games below .500…We must have some pretty good talent. It sure would be nice to actually play a decent game for 9 innings.
I don’t know much about the NL, but Maholm is a Cy Young candidate, right?
He is one of the top 25 candidates…it is just our bad luck that we have faced all 25.
Well, the Tigers opportunity to win this game without scoring more than two runs, which is hard enough, is about to close as Max is about to implode…

Who knew? drawing walks helps you score runs…How Berry does not make it into this lineup is crazy…He draws walks and brings speed…we actually scored on a hard hit ball from 2nd base w/ less than 2 outs…You do not need all HR hitters in a lineup…when we get the DH back, there is no reason, not to play him. He gets on base every game.

There should be a stipulation in each player’s contract stating that they lose $1,000 in salary for every error. The amount of fielding lapses this team has had this year is unbelievable…

It’s probably every team. We’re just sensitive to it b/c we watch so many Tigers games. More & better cameras are simply magnifying what was already happening.

Tigers walked 7 (2 IBB), Cubs have been averaging 2.5 per game; allowed 3 SBs.
That’s an embarrassing loss.
BTW, I’m still mad that they didn’t change DYs pirouette to an error that led to 2 ER against JV last week.
I have watched a lot of baseball in all my years and I have never seen a team that beats itself so often and yet, doesn’t admit the real problems..These are mental lapses, we knew that they would have limited range, etc. But, they have to make the routine plays. They have proven to be incapable on a consistent basis. They also seem determined to call it things like “we just have not clicked” and yet, they double down on these slugger happy DH filled lineups. I don’t get it, They spent all night making Malhom look like Cy Young, then the bottom of the order again rallies and they have 1st and 2nd nobody out and Boesch, Cabby, and Fielder coming up against a last place club and they get nothing…Luckily against the Reds we were on 3rd when they got the WP. You can not keep taking innings off at the plate, just wasting at bats and being this bad in the field..Most teams would recognize that defense is why they are under .500 and make some moves or hold some people accountable. Not these Tigers, they just keep waiting to click. Has anyone ever seen a team that continues to just make errors night after night because they are not focused offensively or defensively for 9 innings, yet, the coaching staff takes no blame. It isn’t about clicking…It’s just bad baseball. Laird lets a ball go through his legs and gives Chicago a run early, then we have an error that leads to the winning run. This is Major league baseball…They spot the other team a couple runs each game. THIS IS NOT AN EXAGERATION…This is just terrible baseball…Now they have a lot of very good players, so, it isn’t as putrid as the late 90’s and early 2000’s…but, those teams did not beat themselves nearly as much as this squad. It is sickening.
It’s so true. These Tigers do not have the mental strength even to make routine fielding plays. They pretty much came into this season with a mental attitude to lose. And they are excelling at that. This team does not play well together. There MUST be some sort of tension between players in that clubhouse.
I think that too, but then I see JV the day after he got screwed with 2 ER bc Delmon lost the ball in the butterflies laughing in the dugout and sincerely congratulating hitters as they come in. That gives me hope.
