Game 2017.105: Tigers at Yankees

Hey, Mikie did it! He made the Faces of WAR page.

Apparently the wrist of Jose Iglesias is bothersome. He has passed up the Cubs new backup catcher for 3rd highest WAR on the team.

  2. Mikie Mahtook, CF
  3. Justin Upton, LF

  1. Hey Tigers did you ever think that maybe you have the right players in your system.. But you just play the wrong ones…
Mikie.. Adduci.. Hicks.. Maybe Jimenez.. Farmer.. VerHagen, Machado… The lineup is immediately more efficient by sitting VMart..

  2. There’s the Sanchez old. R3 NO OUTS AND you don’t even come close to getting him in.. 3 outs later.

  3. I’ve got to give Annibal a lot of credit. He has pitched some decent games since he volunteered to go to Toledo. Maybe Frankie should have followed his lead. I’d let him start the 7th on a short leash and have Bruce ready to come in and bail him out.

  4. Greene has been lights out all year. Only needs 3 more outs. The bats can help by tacking on a run or two.

  5. Gave Bruce the vote of confidence and he comes out 102..gets the job done… .glad he reads DTW….

  6. Apparently Greene isn’t happy unless he has a crisis to pitch out of! So, he created the crisis and got the save.

  7. I like Greenes.. Pitching attitude… He has been the best pen guy all year at what he does.. Closing just the next step..

  8. This is 4 out of 5 Good games the past week.. BRAD +1 ON pitching moves today.. By the book again.. Win

  9. Tigers win and I’m full of complaints. I don’t think it was smart to test Gardner’s arm with McCann on such a shallow hit (kudos to Romine, though – I’d been getting sour about why he wasn’t pinch hit for, and yes I did see a certain rationale for opting not to). I wish Detroit pitchers would just stop it already with pickoff attempts. Frazier’s play on Upton was the usual reminder that Casty as 3B is a net loss, like a tire you have to inflate every few days because you’re too cheap to get a new one. Not impressed with the bullpen even though they got it done, barely. Stumpf did what he has often done, come in for a pitch or a batter and done more harm than good without affecting his own ERA, and I’m sorry, Tony, but Greene is rarely lights out. Glad to have him – where would the Tigers be without him? – but “lights out” and “Tigers reliever” have been incongruous words since who knows when.

  10. $85 million in payroll on guys who have spent a total of two days combined, among them, in the Faces of WAR. Meanwhile, salary reduction of $6 million in dealing guys who spent all or most of the season there. Not a month with a winning record this season, which would be a first since – you guessed it – 2003. I don’t know if a strong finish would have on any bearing on the return of Ausmus, but it wouldn’t hurt.

    1. It is going to be a long year but I’m pretty sure Brad won’t be back. My question is will the Ilitch family still own the team next April and if they do will Big Al still be GM.

  11. Lighten up Loon. Ball pen was good tonight. Compare it to the Indians – Red Sox game where there were two blown saves in the ninth inning, one by each team! Casty is a unique base runner, how anyone can try to go to third on the ball hit in front of you is weird. Even if they were conceding the run, you’re a dead duck at third. taking you out o scoring position. As far as Greene goes, .274 ERA all year and .000 ERA in July is practically a miracle in our pen.

    1. Yeah, leave it to me to be sour after a win. I look for the silver lining in the losses, too. I don’t like being a contrarian. Yes I do.

True, Greene gets it done. That’s what really matters.

I didn’t catch Casty getting put out at 3B, just saw it in the play by play. Unique, yeah. Being a triples guy, he might be magnetically drawn to third base when on second and unable to help himself, who knows. I like his attitude, wish I could embrace him (figuratively, mind you) as the third baseman.

  12. Pen goes 2.1..no charged runs.. Red hot Yankees…save a Win… That’s “lights out”!… Everything is relative!

  13. always good to see the NYY lose, and especially nice when DET is on the winning side of a NYY boxscore

    1. I used to feel more that way, Stormin. But the Yankees seem almost human to me now.

  14. Is there a time limit to how long a game is delayed???
I would have thought that it would be called by now…

  15. Just saw where MLB has an 8pm re-start…Who pitches
the 8th??? Oh boy here we go…

    1. It’s Rondon, he’s the 8th inning guy no matter what. I think it’s a mistake but it could work. He did get one out last night.

  16. Brad rolls out Bruce…wow….for the 8th…
Hope Greene has enough gas in the tank….Defense,
    don’t screw this up…
