Russ says the Tigers need to tank the season and use the contraction of the Expos as a building opportunity.
They need to lose as many games as possible this season. Why? Two words: Vladimir Guerrero! The guy is a superstar. And, when the Expos contract next season, the last place team will get the first pick of players off of the contracted team’s rosters.
Look quick, but the Tiger aren’t the worst team in baseball. That dishonor goes to Milwaukee. And if the Tigers win this series against the Royals, they’ll even move out of last place in their division.
Even so, scouts look at this team and scream that it’s time for the Tigers to seriously rebuild. One scout took out the Tiger roster this week and suggested trying to package Higginson, Matt Anderson and anyone else in a trade to get some good young talent.
Roster Moves Dmitri Young was placed on the 15 day DL because of a hernia. Also, Craign Monroe was recalled from Toledo and Andres Torres was sent back to the Mud Hens.
Seth Greisinger to get start on Friday Greisinger is taking Lima’s spot in the rotation, and Jose is moving to the bullpen. To make room on the roster either Dmitri Young will go on the DL or Salazar or Torres will be sent down to Toledo. Welcome back Seth.
Not only can I not come up with a column idea for Wednesday, but the baseball game I’m watching for inspiration “features” the Tigers and Royals, who could make an NHL fan out of anyone. This is just bad baseball.
Nate Cornejo isn’t working out as the fifth starter, and while I suspect that Julio Santana will get smoked by any lineup with four or five left-handed bats in it, it’s better to let Cornejo work and learn in Toledo than make him a punching bag on a bad team.
