Thames and Bonderman set to rejoin team

It sounds like the plan is to activate Marcus Thames this weekend. Thames has started to hit well in Toledo, meaning he may be ready to do some big league thumping. The Tigers need some extra thump in the lineup. With Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez combining to provide little power, the Tigers need someone else to turn to for a game changing hit and Thames provides that.

Also, signs are pointing towards Bonderman returning to the rotation. Galarraga will start the day game on Monday against the White Sox. Jim Leyland knows who will start the night game but he isn’t ready to announce it…and Bonderman’s rehab has been declared over. For once I might have been right about something. On a related note Always a Tiger looks at how Bonderman may cope with decreased velocity (I think this will be temporary and that his velocity will come back over time).

Beck’s Blog: Thames likely returning this weekend

And that’s that for Tiger Stadium

The news came down yesterday that despite valiant attempts by many to save her, Tiger Stadium was going to finally come down. Surprisingly I felt very little when I heard the news.

I think a combination of things were in play. First and foremost the corner just hasn’t looked right since the majority of the stadium was stripped away last summer. I drive by on a fairly regular basis and it just wasn’t the Tiger Stadium I had memories of.

The plans for maintaining the field and part of the stadium were noble, and quite frankly I would have been thrilled to see it come to fruition. But like so much else, the timing wasn’t there with the downturn in economy. That could have been avoided perhaps if it weren’t for the decade of nothingness since the last game was played.

I’ll continue to drive by the place, and it will just be another empty lot in Detroit. But I was there for the last game and I have the memories of my first game. Plus, I had my chance to say good bye to her.

Tigers Minor League Wrap 6/3/09

Toledo 5 Durham 2
Marcus Thames is wrapping up his rehab assignment in fine fashion with a homer and a single. Brent Clevlen doubled and tripled. Dusty Ryan and Wil Rhymes both homered as well. Ruddy Lugo allowed 2 runs on 7 hits and 2 walk with 4 K’s in 6 innings. Clay Rapada got the 3 inning save with only 1 walk allowed to go with 4 K’s. Wilkin Ramirez remains out with a hand injury.

Altoona 10 Erie 8
Brennan Boesch, Jeff Kunkel and Ryan Strieby each homered and singled. Mike Hollimon tripled. Alfredo Figaro had a rough outing allowing 8 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks, and fanning 4 in 5.2 innings.

Lakeland – PPD

Great Lakes 4 West Michigan 6
Gustavo Nunez went 3 for 4 with a triple. Casey Crosby allowed 4 runs on 5 hits and a walk with 4 K’s in 5 innings. Billy Nowlin went on the DL and Keith Hernandez was promoted from EST.

Game 2009.051: Red Sox at Tigers

PREGAME: It just has to be better tonight right? Fewer errors. Fewer baserunning mistakes. More big hits with runners on base. No plunking in a run? Does that sound good to everybody?

Armando Galarraga will try and build on his last start, which was his only quality start in the month of May. He faced Boston once last year and wasn’t good, but he managed a no decision despite allowing 5 runs and not getting out of the 6th inning.

Meanwhile the Tigers will face Josh Beckett. Beckett faced the Tigers once last year and destroyed them with 8 K’s, no walks, and just 1 run in 7 innings. And Beckett is rolling with 5 quality starts in a row and his last 2 starts he has allowed 1 earned run in 15 innings with 13 K’s.  Game on.

Boston vs. Detroit – June 3, 2009 | MLB.com: Gameday

POSTGAME: Well, Josh Beckett was really good. The Tigers offense has had their share of struggles lately. But this is one of those tip-your-cap games. Beckett was nasty and worked the edges of a big strike zone masterfully. Tuesday the Tigers let Matsuzaka off the hook. Tonight was a pitcher on his game toying with a struggling offense.

But there is some good to take from the game. Armando Galarraga looks to be regaining his 2008 form with his second consecutive quality start. And the Tigers once again made the 9th inning way more interesting than it should have been with some good at-bats. And Curtis Granderson tripled.

Of course the bullpen proved to be awful with Zach Miner and Nate Robertson turning the game into a laugher. Leyland had no way of knowing that the Red Sox would forget how to field the ball in the 8th and how to throw strikes in the 9th and the Tigers 4 run deficit appeared insurmountable at the time. And conserving some bullpen in a lost cause isn’t a bad tactic. Still, those runs proved to be the difference.

Tigers Minor League Wrap 6/2/09

Toledo 5 Durham 6 (11 inn)
Marcus Thames singled in 5 at-bats. Mike Hessman doubled and homered. Brent Dlugach singled and homered. Chris Lambert struck out 6, walked none, and allowed just 4 hits in 6 innings. Casey Fien struggled ash he allowed 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.

Altoona 9 Erie 12
Max Leon went 4 for 5, as did Shawn Roof (2 triples). Alex Avila, Joe Tucker, and Ryan Strieby each had 2 hits. Jon Kibler was rocked for 8 runs and 11 hits in 2.2 innings but his offense clearly picked him up. Jay Sborz allowed 1 runs in 3.1 innings and Josh Rainwater (2 IP) and Cody Satterwhite (1 IP, Save #7) finished things off.

Lakeland 1 Palm Beach 2
Michael Bertram went 2 for 4. Lauren Gagnier struck out 10 in 6 innings of work which helped limited the 10 baserunners he allowed to 2 runs. Brett Jacobson fanned 2 in his 2 scoreless innings.

Great Lakes 8 West Michigan 7
Gustavo Nunez went 4 for 5. Jordan Lennerton singled, homered, and walked. Brandon Hamilton lost the strike zone and walked 4 and allowed a hit and all came around to score with Hamilton only recording one out. Anthony Shawler fanned 5 and allowed 1 run on 6 hit in 4 innings of relief.

Game 2009.050: Red Sox at Tigers

PREGAME: This is some stretch of games the Tigers are about to embark on. Three against the Red Sox and 3 against the Angels (who give the Tigers fits) before a 5 game series in Chicago. The Tigers will be getting back Marcus Thames in the near future and likely Jeremy Bonderman and that means that 2 players will likely get sent down or out, whether or not they really deserve it. The team and its outlook could look really different by next Friday. Or maybe not.

With that preamble out of the way the Tigers welcome in the Red Sox who have the 3rd highest OPS in the American League. So it will be no easy task for the Tigers pitchers. The Sox are known for seeing a lot of pitches, will makes tonight’s match-up with Rick Porcello interesting because he typically doesn’t throw a lot of pitches.

Random factoid of the night: Dustin Pedroia has grounded into 11 double plays this year.

The Tigers don’t typically see a lot of pitches with their 3.70 P/PA only a smidge more than Seattle’s 3.69 which is the fewest in the AL. But Daisuke Matsuzaka typically throws quite a few topping the 4 pitch per PA mark in each of his first 2 years and he’s at 3.8 this year. Matsuzaka is looking for his first and he missed a chunk of time due to injury. He hasn’t gotten out of the 6th inning this year and has allowed at least 3 runs in each of his 4 starts.

Bonus Random factoid of the night: Magglio Ordonez has fanned in half of his PA’s against Daisuke.

Boston vs. Detroit – June 2, 2009 | MLB.com: Gameday

POSTGAME: It happens. The Tigers had a decent game plan against Matsuzaka. They were willing to wait him out (4.6 P/PA). They got some walks, they got some hits, but not enough of either and throw in some bad baserunning and that’s how you waste 9 baserunners in 5 innings turn into 1 run. Actually, part of the problem is that of the 6 hits none were for extra bases, and a couple other hard hit balls were right at people, but…it happens.

Cabrera, Granderson, and Polanco all hit multiple balls hard. Gerald Laird had good at-bats but the Tigers didn’t get enough runs early and then they were playing uphill against a good bullpen.

Rick Porcello wasn’t bad, but not as sharp as he has been. He was also singled to death, but the Red Sox did mix in 2 exta base hits and those led to the 3 runs he gave up.

The Tigers bullpenning was passable except for when Ryan Perry lost the strike zone. We saw this a little bit with Perry early on and fortunately it hadn’t happened for quite sometime. You hate to see a run plunked in, which is what Brandon Lyon contributed but  in the end he came into a bases loaded, 1 out situation and allowed 1 run. Lyon pitched 2 more innings allowing only a double.

As for that rally off of Papelbon, let’s look at it for what it was. A broken bat, a check swing, and a seeing eye groundball. But I will give Josh Anderson a ton of credit for his 10 pitch strikeout .

Tigers Minor League Wrap 6/1/09

Charlotte 13 Toledo 3
The Tigers need a 6th starter next Monday. Eddie Bonine may have been a candidate, but he didn’t last through 2 innings before allowing 9 hits and 7 runs. Marcus Thames went 4 for 5 as the DH tonight. Dusty Ryan went 2 for 3 with a walk and a double.

Altoona 5 Erie 4 (10 inn)
Ryan Strieby hit his 13 homer and also singled. Mike Hollimon also homered, singled, and walked. Alex Avila was 2 for 3 with 2 walks. Pat Stanley allowed 3 runs in 6.1 innings on 5 hits, 1 walk and 5 K’s.

Lakeland 4 Palm Beach 1
Santo De Leon went 2 for 4. Charlie Furbush allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings. Lester Oliveros fanned 4 in 2 innings of work. Robbie Weinhardt got the save pitching a scoreless 9th.

Tigers I have known

A quick look at some former Tigers and their performances in their new homes:

Gary Sheffield

Sheffield is in the midst of that bounce back season that many were hoping for, and few were expecting. He has a 292/433/521 line and is walking in one out of every 5 plate appearances. And Mets fans are loving it

I wasn’t in the camp that “Sheffield was done” in the sense he couldn’t hit anymore. But I was (and still am) in the camp that said Sheffield couldn’t stay healthy anymore. Fortunately the Tigers are winning and offensive struggles haven’t been prolonged or else we’d be hearing about what a mistake it was to let Sheffield walk.

Matt Joyce

I like Matt Joyce. I like him a lot. I don’t like him like him, but I do think he’s a very good player. He has toiled primarily at AAA where he has a 315/408/530 line. He was just recalled to the Rays and he homered yesterday. He only has 15 PA’s at the big league level but has homered twice already.

Guillermo Moscoso

The centerpiece of the deal that brought Gerald Laird to Detroit was just called up to the Texas Rangers. In his first appearance he went an inning allowing 2 hits with 1 strikeout.

He had been pitching fairly well for the Rangers Double A affiliate. He had a 7.7 K/9 rate and fanning 2.5 for every batter he walked. He only allowed 1 homer in 42.1 innings.

James Skelton

The little left handed hitting catching prospect was selected by the Diamondbacks in the Rule 5 draft. Arizona didn’t want to keep him on the big league roster and the Tigers didn’t want him back too much (they got Brooks Brown as compensation). He’s playing for the Arizona Double A team and has a .376 OBP. But he’s only hitting .221 and with only 7 extra base hits his slugging is south of .300.

Tigers Minor League Wrap 5/31/09

Charlotte 0 Toledo 6
We covered the pitching for this game already. Marcus Thames homered, singled and walked. Mike Hessman homered. Don Kelly walked twice and doubled.

Akron 2 Erie 7
Scott Sizemore and And Dirks each had 3 hits. Ryan Strieby tripled and singled. Luis Marte allowed just 2 hits and 1 run, though he did walk 4 in 7 innings.

Lakeland 6 Palm Beach 5
Justin Henry went 3 for 5. Michael Bertram had 2 hits and 2 walks. Trevor Feeney allowed 1 unearned run in 5 innings with 3 hits, a walk, and 4 K’s.

Wisconsin 8 West Michigan 3
Gustavo Nunez had 4 hits, 2 of which were doubles. Mauricio Robles battled his control and walked 5 on the way to 5 runs allowed in 3 innings. Jered Gayhart fanned 2 with one hit allowed in 2 innings.

Is Bonderman ready?

Jeremy Bonderman has shown some positive signs in his each of his rehab starts, but tonight’s was probably his best effort. He lasted 8 innings and threw 98 pitches, 66 of which were strikes. He didn’t allow a run and scatttered 6 hits and no walks while fanning 5.

I haven’t heard reports on his velocity yet, and that has been an area where we know he hasn’t reached his pre-surgical levels in his other starts.

The Tigers will need a 6th starter a week from Monday in Chicago. It would not surprise me in the least to see Bonderman activated for the evening part of the day-night doubleheader.

Game 2009.049: Tigers at Orioles

PREGAME: The Tigers are running out kind of a different lineup today. One without Miguel Cabrera or Placido Polanco. They didn’t really do much last night, but still…

Edwin Jackson will try and get the Tigers a series split. Detroit hasn’t played particularly well in this series, and Jackson throwing a bunch of 0’s on the board would certainly help the Tigers chances.

He’ll be opposed by Jason Berken who is making his career start. He allowed 7 hits and 3 walks but only 2 runs in 5 innings in his debut against the Blue Jays.

Detroit vs. Baltimore – May 31, 2009 | MLB.com: Gameday

POSTGAME: Well Jackson certainly did throw a bunch of 0’s on the board. Eight of them to be exact and he was efficient enough that at 101 pitches he probably should have been given the chance to complete the shut out himself. I mean this as no disrespect to Fernando Rodney who has been pitching great. But Jackson has been asked to work deep into other games when he wasn’t as effective, or when the lead was ridiculously comfortable. I thought this would be one of those “it’s his game” type situations.

Regardless, he picked up 7 K’s while only allowing 2 hits and a walk. And somehow he held Luke Scott in check fanning him twice and getting a 3-1 lineout to first.

The Tigers offense was fairly anemic again. I don’t know how much credit should be given to the Orioles young staff, but they held Detroit in check and did so fairly easily the last 4 games. But Curtis Granderson drove a solo homer to right center and that was all the Tigers would need. Though they did add on when Clete Thomas and Jeff Larish drove in runs late.

Ordonez’s hitting streak was snapped, but he did take a walk his last time up.

Tigers Minor League Wrap 5/30/09

Charlotte 4 Toledo 2
Wil Rhymes and Don Kelly both went 3 for 4. Dusty Ryan homered, his 6th of the year. I think it’s time Ryan comes up and plays 2 days a week in lieu of Dane Sardhina. Brooks Brown went 8 innings using 97 pitches. He allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, 2 walks, and 2 K’s. Freddy Dolsi allowed a run on 3 hits and a walk in 1 inning.

Akron 1 Erie 4
Max Leon singled twice and doubled. Ryan Strieby and Andy Dirks each had 2 hits. Jonah Nickerson allowed just 1 run on 6 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. Cody Satterwhite fanned 2 in 2 scoreless innings.

Lakeland 7 Palm Beach 6 (10 inn)
Jeramy Laster homered and singled. Michael Bertram and Justin Henry each had 2 hits. Thad Weber fanned 4 in 5.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits.

Wisconsin 4 West Michigan 3
Brandon Douglas and Jordan Lennerton both went 2 for 4. Luke Putkonen allowed just 1 unearned run with 6 K’s in 6 innings. Victor Larez allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in his inning of work.
