Game 41: Cardinals at Tigers

PREGAME: The Tigers return home after a disappointing end to an otherwise good road trip. They’ll kick off a 9 game homestand against the Cardinals, who I think were pretty good last year – at least good enough to win the World Series.

Andrew Miller’s debut is perhaps overshadowing the world series rematch. I’ve written about Miller’s minor league numbers already. So I’ll just say that I hope this goes better than the first starts for Virgil Vasquez, Justin Verlander, Jeremy Bonderman, and Zach Miner. Miller at least has the benefit of having some big league experience.

The Cardinals will send out Braden Looper, who through the first 572 appearances of his career was a reliever. He’ll be making his 9th start of the year (and his career). He’s doing quite well with an ERA of 2.29. He’s done it by striking out twice as many as he walks, and keeping the ball in the park with 2 homers allowed in 51 innings.

Interesting Looper stat #1: Opponents putting the first pitch in play only have a 515 OPS.
Interesting Looper stat #2: He’s been great the first 5 innings, but as it gets later in the game and past the 75 pitch mark he gets more vulnerable.

So, make him throw pitches and wear him out. Sounds simple enough huh?

Game Time 7:05

POSTGAME
: I had some other commitments tonight, so I just got home and watched the condensed version of the game on mlb.tv. Nothing like a good thumping in front of a sold out crowd as a welcome home present. I’ll take a closer look at Miller’s outing tomorrow. Even without seeing him pitch, the results look to be pretty impressive. But I don’t think this will change the Tigers plans with him. Although it will put less pressure on them to get Bonderman back in his regular spot (of course they could monkey with this anyways with the off day and Mike Maroth being available).

  • Sean Casey destroys Cardinals. He of course torched them in the World Series, and added 4 hits today. If only the Tigers and Cardinals were in the same division…Seriously, it was nice to see Sean get rewarded today after having a couple hard hit balls yesterday end up in Hinske’s glove.
  • Placido Polanco has pulled 4 doubles to left field over the last 2 games. After he began the season slapping everything to right field, teams began to pitch him inside. I think it’s safe to say he’s adjusted.
  • Jason Grilli – awful again.
  • Now granted, Monroe and Inge are a little better than many 8 & 9 hitters, at least in terms of power. That said, each picked up 2 walks tonight which had to drive LaRussa nuts. Four walks to the bottom 2 guys in the order has to be infuriating.
  • The Tigers walked 5 times tonight. That 5th walk went to Pudge Rodriguez bringing his season total to 2.
  • Looper didn’t make it out of the 5th, meaning that Tony LaRussa used quite a few bullpen arms. Here’s hoping the Tigers can make Anthony Reyes work tomorrow night as well.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/17/07

Louisville 0 Toledo 1
Zach Miner wasn’t the only guy in the organization who had to change plans in the early morning. Jon Connolly was called up from Erie to start in Miner’s place for the Mud Hens and threw a 1 hitter. Actually, both pitchers threw 1 hitters, and with it being only a 7 inning game due to the doubleheader, it was completed in 1:28. Chris Shelton doubled, walked, and was hit by pitch to constitute all the Mud Hen offense.

Louisville 3 Toledo 4
Mike Hessman had 2 hits, including his 10th homer, and a walk. Jack Hannahan added 2 hits as well. Jeremy Johnson allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, walking none and fanning 5 over 6 innings.

Trenton 2 Erie 3
Jeff Larish had 2 hits to lead the Wolbes attack. Dallas Trahern went 7 innings allowing 5 runs on 2 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Kyle Sleeth pitched 2 innings allowing only 1 hit.

Dunedin 4 Lakeland 7
Michael Hernandez doubled twice among his 3 hits. Ryan Roberson singled and hit his 8th homer. Cameron Maybin went 2 for 4. Kyle Denney allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks over 5 innings.

West Michigan 5 Quad cities 2
Deik Scram had 3 hits and 2 walks for a perfect day at the plate and he had 2 stolen bases (and a caught stealing). Audy Ciriaco hit his first homer driving in 3 in the 9th inning. Angel Castro allowed 1 unearned run in 6 innings of work.

Ledezma’s struggles

Wil Ledezma began the season on a high note. In his first 3 appearances he allowed only 4 baserunners over 6 innings. He fanned 4 and didn’t allow a run. But since then he has been awful.

Not counting tonight’s collapse, he has made 9 more appearances. He’s amassed 13 1/3 innings and allowed 19 hits, 13 walks, 3 home runs, he’s balked, been called for baserunner obstruction, and was ejected. He’s become a mop-up man who hasn’t even been effective in that role as evidenced by his 1 1/3 inning, 47 pitch, 4 run effort on Sunday.

Now with Bobby Seay performing competently, Ledezma is seeing fewer high leverage situations. And now Tim Byrdak has come in and turned in 2 stellar performances. Could this be the end of Ledezma as a Tiger? He is out of options meaning that he would need to clear waivers before being sent to the minors. Even with his struggles, he’s a lefty that can throw in the mid 90’s meaning he’d be claimed by someone. So removing him from the active roster likely means removing him from the organization.

It is probably premature to assure Byrdak or Seay spots on the roster. As good as Byrdak has been, it’s only 2 appearances. Ledezma still looked good after 2 games. And in Seay’s case, he needs to continue to prove himself. However, as long as Byrdak and Seay continue to have success, Ledezma leash is only going to get shorter.

Game 40: Tigers at Red Sox

PREGAME: Every once in a while I’ll pull up a stats site called Dougs Stats. I like it because he has leaderboards for the last 20 games, and it can be interesting to look at. I bring this up because tonight’s starter, Chad Durbin, has posted the 10th best ERA over the last 20 team games in the American League. (equally surprising is that Jeremy Bonderman is 8th worst). Not a bad stretch for a replacement 5th starter.

He’ll need to be that good again tonight as the Red Sox send out Curt Schilling who is having a typical Schilling season with a 3.63 ERA.

The Tigers will keep most of their starters in for the second game with only Marcus Thames spelling Craig Monroe and Mike Rabelo catching for Pudge.

Game Time 7:05pm

POSTGAME: Now this one hurts. So much to like and not like about this game. Certainly the final score falls into not-like.

  • Do you get pissed at an offense with 8 extra base hits, and 4 walks against Curt Schilling? An offense that kept putting runners in scoring position with less than 2 outs? An offense that kept driving the ball hard and probably could have had a few more hits is one to get mad at?
  • I guess maybe you do when only 2 runs are plated. Gary Sheffield and Marcus Thames in particular missed some choice oppotunities.
  • Do you cheer or jeer Brandon Inge who homered and drove in half the runs, but also fanned 3 times and made an error that resulted in the tying run?
  • I certainly won’t get mad at Chad Durbin who turned in another fine effort, even if he walked a few too many for my liking.
  • Okay, I can just be mad at Ledezma. Even though he induced weak contact for the tying run, he put the tying run on 3rd with a walk. And then it became moot in the 7th with the home run
  • And when the team struggles, Jim Leyland seems to over-manage. Taking out Curtis Granderson who had doubled twice, walked, and made a diving catch in favor of Omar Infante was simply bizarre. Yes a sidearm lefty is a tough match up for Curtis, but Leyland did exactly what Francona wanted him to do.

Frustrating day to say the least. You’d like to say a 3-4 road trip to the Metrodome and Boston is acceptable, especially since the Tigers had to patch rotation together. And on the surface it’s not so bad. But given that the starting pitching was pretty good (save for Vasquez), and that the offense generally hit the ball pretty well, it seems there should have been more. And that’s what makes it hurt. Today’s game was there for the taking, and the Tigers just couldn’t put it away.

Game 39: Tigers at Red Sox

PREGAME: It’s double header time! The first game is slated for a 12:35 start and will feature Mike Maroth taking on Julian Tavarez.

Tavarez is really the only weak link in the Red Sox rotation. He posts a 6.60 ERA and has struggled pretty much every time out. He’s also had more trouble with right handed hitters who have posted a 976 OPS against him (lefties are at 630).

Mike Maroth is coming off his best start, a 6 2/3 inning, 1 run effort against the Twins. The key for Maroth will be keeping the ball in the park. He’s allowed 7 homers already this year.

Forget all the Maroth stuff, Miner is starting today because Mike is sick. So this will be 3 starts this week by pitchers not in the rotation. Sheesh.

Game Time 12:35

POSTGAME: Mud Hen pitchers unite!

Really, any time you call up a guy from AAA to make a spot start and he gives you 5+ and only 1 earned run you have to be satisfied. Given that it was a few hours notice, and against the best offense in the league I think you should be overwhelmed.

If it was possible Miner was upstaged by fellow Mud Hen come Tiger, Tim Byrdak. Byrdak came in with 2 men on and one out and got out of the jam. In total he retired all 6 batters he faced, fanning 5 of them.

Unfortunately the Tigers bats couldn’t get going, despite putting out their A lineup against a pitcher with an ERA over 6. It was the first time the Tigers didn’t pick up an extra base hit since April 15th when coincidentally they lost 2-1 to Josh Towers and the Blue Jays.

Losing a close game is always tough, because by definition it was winnable. But I’m not to bummed, not sure why. Maybe if I’d seen it (I was at work listening) it would have bugged me more. Instead I just get to appreciate the unpredictability of baseball where a pitching match-up that looked to induce a slugfest instead turned into an unexpected pitcher’s duel.

Red Sox 2, Tigers 1

Zach Miner called up

While all the reports yesterday were that Andrew Miller would be called up with Jeremy Bonderman going on the disabled list, today’s game notes indicate that Zach Miner was called up. My guess is that this is the result of the rainout and today’s doubleheader. Miner will give the team another arm in the bullpen if need be today. He, or perhaps one of the other relievers (maybe Byrdak?) will probably be sent down following today’s game to make room for Miller.

Miner had a rough start to the year, but has made 3 quality starts in a row and hasn’t allowed a run in his last 13 innings.

UPDATE: Thanks to those who sent this, but Miner is starting in place of a sick Maroth.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/16/07

Louisville 5 Toledo 4 (11 innings, resumption of suspended game)
Time Perez had two doubles and Mike Hessman homered and doubled. Chris Shelton added 2 singles and a walk. The bullpen pieced together the rest of this game after Yorman Bazardo pitched 2 innings before the rains came on Wednesday night. Cory Hamman pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings allowing 4 hits.

Trenton 1 Erie 2
The Wolves only mustered 3 hits, two of which belonged to Erick Almonte including a homer. It was Almonte’s first game with the Seawolves. Eddie Bonine pitched 8 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits, 2 walks, and 3 K’s.

Lakeland 7 Sarasota 4
Mike Hernandez homered for one of his 3 hits. Wilkin Ramirez had 3 singles and a walk and added 3 stolen bases. Cameron Maybin and Wil Rhymes each doubled, singled, and walked. Eleazar Aponte was dinged for 3 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks and 4 K’s over 4 1/3 innings.

Bonderman to the DL

Andrew Miller
Andrew Miller – cr. Roger DeWitt

Jeremy Bonderman has been placed on the DL retro to the 9th. Andrew Miller will start on Friday night.

MORE: The first post was brief, because it was from a blackberry. With an actual keyboard at my disposal, I’ll expand a little more.

This DL stint doesn’t worry me greatly. This is a blister issue, which should only need a couple weeks to resolve itself. With it being retroactive to May 9th, Bonderman will be eligible to come off the DL on the 24th. The 24th would be his next turn to start so the damage may be limited to 2 starts.

As for Miller, his numbers are a little more complex than what you see at a first glance. He of course shined in his AA debut last weekend going 8 innings and allowing only an unearned run on 6 hits, 7 K’s, and no walks.

At Lakeland he was a little up and down with walks being his only struggle. He had a 28/15 K/BB ratio in 41 innings. The complexity comes in his 3.48 ERA. By all accounts Lakeland’s infield defense was poor, and Miller is an extreme ground ball pitcher (4.5 ground outs for every air out). With the Tiger defense behind him, he could be fine if he keeps the ball down.

And for those of you worrying about rushing him, I don’t see it as an issue. He already tasted the big leagues last year, and they’re not asking him to join the rotation. This is a spot start (or two) and with make-ups in July this was likely to occur at some point this season.

Stuff that doesn’t fit elsewhere

You may have noticed I’ve been doing a little something different with link posts. I’ve been posting things to del.icio.us throughout the day, and then del.icio.us will dump them all into a blog post. It’s nice and convenient for me, but I don’t have as much room to comment. So tonight I’ll go old school.

Schedule Changes

The Tigers have had a couple start times change, and had a couple of their rainout make ups added. The May 26th game against Cleveland and the June 23rd game against the Braves have been moved from 7:00pm to 3:55pm and are now part of the Fox National package. The June 16th game originally scheduled for 3:55 on Fox was moved to 7:00pm and will be on FSN Plus.

The Toronto rain out/cold out will be made up on September 10th at 7:00pm and will be televised on FSN Detroit.

The White Sox rain out will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader with a 2:00pm first pitch on July 24th. It’s in the middle of a string of 16 consecutive games without and off day, so an additional starter will need to be called up.

Bondo ready to return

Danny Knobler reports that Jeremy Bonderman looks likely to return to the rotation on Friday night. The Tigers are already doing enough mixing and matching with their arms, so getting things back to normal will be nice.

Infante to change at-bat music

From the same Knobler piece, we find out Placido Polanco’s and Omar Infante’s at-bat music. I’ve long said that my favorite at-bat music for any Tiger is Infante’s so finding out artist (Tono Rosario) was great. But finding out that Infante planned to change it was disappointing to say the least.

Granderson doesn’t need no stinkin’ batting average

Beyond the Boxscore has been handing out weekly awards and last week Curtis Granderson won the Batting Average is For Wussies award on the strength of a 975 OPS despite a meager 250 batting average. That’s been par for the season for Granderson. Curtis is 7th in slugging and tied for 2nd in extra base hits. What’s new is that he’s started to walk. After only 6 walks in April, he’s already at 7 in May.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/15/07

Louisville 2 Toledo 0
This game was suspended due to rain in the 2nd inning.

Trenton 4 Erie 2
Eulogio De La Cruz allowed 4 runs in the first inning, but settled down and followed with 6 scoreless innings. In total he allowed 5 hits and 3 walks while fanning 7. Jeff Larish doubled and Kody Kirkland was 1 for 4.

Sarasota 1 Lakeland 2
Ovandy Suero had 2 hits, 2 walks, 4 stolen bases, and 2 caught stealing – so he was busy. Cameron Maybin was 0 for 2 with a sac fly. Justin Justice sat out again today.

West Michigan – PPD Rain

Game 38: Tigers at Red Sox

PREGAME: The Tigers will try to nip this losing streak at 2 games. Tonight it will be heat (Justin Verlander) against the opposite of heat (Tim Wakefield)

Wakefield has been ridiculously good this year posting a 1.79 ERA. He’s done it by keeping the ball in the park with only 2 homers in 45 innings. Combined with a WHIP a smidge over 1 and that isn’t a lot of scoring. He’s been particularly tough on left handers with only 2 extra base hits allowed this season.

Justin Verlander has been pretty good himself with a 2.83 ERA. His weakness is that he’s been prone to bouts of wildness with 2 5 walk outings already.

Game Time 7:05

POSTGAME: Describing Verlander’s start as excellent may be an understatement. In fact, I’d probably rank it as the 2nd most impressive start this year by a Tiger (behind Bonderman’s duel with Halladay). Statistically it was on par with several other starts by Robertson, Durbin, and of course Justin himself. However, given the context of the situation: against the Red Sox offense, after a couple bad losses, with a depleted bullpen – that was really stepping up.

And props to the Sox fans who recognized the effort with a standing ovation.

Fernando Rodney came in for the last 4 outs, and was quite effective despite allowing 2 baserunners on a fly that found a spot between Granderson and Monroe and a tough chopper to Rodney.

The Tigers bats bounced back after struggling against Matsuzaka. They racked up 12 hits and had a couple other hard hit balls that were fielded clean. Every player except Marcus Thames was able to contribute one way or another.

It was a nice 7-2 win, returning the favor from the night before. It also kept the Indians at bay who thumped the Twins tonight.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/14/07

Toledo 1 Pawtucket 3
Chris Shelton, Timo Perez and Mike Hessman had the only 3 hits. Dennis Tankersley allowed 10 hits and 4 walks over 6 innings but limited the damage to 2 runs. Ian Ostlund allowed his first run after 4 Toledo appearances since his promotion.

Erie-DNP

Sarasota 1 Lakeland 8
Burke Badenhop allowed 1 run on 4 hits and 5 walks over 6 innings. Cameron Maybin singled and walked. Justin Justice missed the last couple games, but nothing has been reported int he Lakeland Ledger yet.

West Michigan 5 Great Lakes 4
Gorkys Hernandez and Lou Ott knocked their first homer of the year. Brennan Boesch added 2 hits. Lauren Gagnier allowed 3 runs on 7 hits.
