Fernando Rodney to the DL

And yet another Tiger player is headed to the disabled list. Fernando Rodney, who hasn’t pitched the last few games due to shoulder stiffness was placed on the DL retroactive to May 21st. Zach Miner will take his place.

While the Tigers have weathered the losses of Kenny Rogers and Joel Zumaya, you wonder just how many more injuries this team can handle. The offense has helped cover up the bullpen so far, but there’s probably a limit. The Tigers who had 2 set-up men last year (who many believed should have been closing) have lost both of them.

Kenny on the Mend?

One of the more encouraging things I saw at Sunday’s game took place before the game even started. I saw Kenny Rogers throwing long toss for about 15 minutes. He was throwing from the gate of the visitors bullpen to the left field foul line. In a game he’s starting, he’ll actually warm up by throwing a little farther than that. Still, it looks like a guy who is much closer to pitching than he is to surgery.

The positive prognosis was also iterated by Danny Knobler on WDFN Monday afternoon. Knobler said that in a conversation on Friday, Rogers told Knobler that he would be disappointed if he wasn’t back in a month.

Right now, and barring set backs, it looks like the worst case scenario is that Rogers will be back in the rotation in another 6 weeks or so. That would put him at right about where his scheduled rehab would land him. But it seems like he’s even ahead of that.

What this really means is that the Tigers bullpen should receive a boost. Ideally Rogers assumes Chad Durbin’s spot in the rotation. After a couple shaky outings, Durbin has been decent. Certainly suitable as a 6th starter to say the least. If he can avoid a big slide in his next half dozen starts, he’ll most likely retain a roster spot and slide to the bullpen.

Like relievers Jason Grilli and Wil Ledezma, Durbin is out of options and has to clear waivers before returning to the minors. I’m all for retaining as much talent as possible in the organization, and roster status should be a factor in these decisions. But the middle of the bullpen has struggled and they need better results. Swapping out Durbin for a struggling reliever could provide a boost.

Now this is all premature because Rogers isn’t even pitching yet. Durbin could struggle. The bullpen could find their stride. But the pen could receive a boost in the form of the disabled list.

Zach Miner called up

While all the reports yesterday were that Andrew Miller would be called up with Jeremy Bonderman going on the disabled list, today’s game notes indicate that Zach Miner was called up. My guess is that this is the result of the rainout and today’s doubleheader. Miner will give the team another arm in the bullpen if need be today. He, or perhaps one of the other relievers (maybe Byrdak?) will probably be sent down following today’s game to make room for Miller.

Miner had a rough start to the year, but has made 3 quality starts in a row and hasn’t allowed a run in his last 13 innings.

UPDATE: Thanks to those who sent this, but Miner is starting in place of a sick Maroth.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/16/07

Louisville 5 Toledo 4 (11 innings, resumption of suspended game)
Time Perez had two doubles and Mike Hessman homered and doubled. Chris Shelton added 2 singles and a walk. The bullpen pieced together the rest of this game after Yorman Bazardo pitched 2 innings before the rains came on Wednesday night. Cory Hamman pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings allowing 4 hits.

Trenton 1 Erie 2
The Wolves only mustered 3 hits, two of which belonged to Erick Almonte including a homer. It was Almonte’s first game with the Seawolves. Eddie Bonine pitched 8 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits, 2 walks, and 3 K’s.

Lakeland 7 Sarasota 4
Mike Hernandez homered for one of his 3 hits. Wilkin Ramirez had 3 singles and a walk and added 3 stolen bases. Cameron Maybin and Wil Rhymes each doubled, singled, and walked. Eleazar Aponte was dinged for 3 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks and 4 K’s over 4 1/3 innings.

Bonderman to the DL

Andrew Miller
Andrew Miller – cr. Roger DeWitt

Jeremy Bonderman has been placed on the DL retro to the 9th. Andrew Miller will start on Friday night.

MORE: The first post was brief, because it was from a blackberry. With an actual keyboard at my disposal, I’ll expand a little more.

This DL stint doesn’t worry me greatly. This is a blister issue, which should only need a couple weeks to resolve itself. With it being retroactive to May 9th, Bonderman will be eligible to come off the DL on the 24th. The 24th would be his next turn to start so the damage may be limited to 2 starts.

As for Miller, his numbers are a little more complex than what you see at a first glance. He of course shined in his AA debut last weekend going 8 innings and allowing only an unearned run on 6 hits, 7 K’s, and no walks.

At Lakeland he was a little up and down with walks being his only struggle. He had a 28/15 K/BB ratio in 41 innings. The complexity comes in his 3.48 ERA. By all accounts Lakeland’s infield defense was poor, and Miller is an extreme ground ball pitcher (4.5 ground outs for every air out). With the Tiger defense behind him, he could be fine if he keeps the ball down.

And for those of you worrying about rushing him, I don’t see it as an issue. He already tasted the big leagues last year, and they’re not asking him to join the rotation. This is a spot start (or two) and with make-ups in July this was likely to occur at some point this season.

Virgil Vasquez to start on Sunday

With Jeremy Bonderman’s finger still causing problems, Virgil Vasquez will take the mound on Sunday Night Baseball. Vasquez has been Mack Avenue Tigers‘ guy to take over Durbin’s spot in the rotation.

Vasquez has been quite solid in his last 5 outings accumulating 31 innings and 41 K’s against 6 walks. He’s only allowed 5 earned runs over that stretch.

The move probably won’t be come official until Sunday, because it will mean removing a member of the bullpen – presumably Aquilino Lopez – to make room.

As for Bonderman, hopefully this is only a one start deal. Right now we’re at the nuisance stage of the injury, and I’d just assume not see it get worse.

Joel Zumaya out 3 months

The news wasn’t good out of New York this afternoon. Joel Zumaya, who injured his hand warming up Saturday night, has a ruptured tendon in the middle finger on his throwing hand. It will require surgery which Zumaya will have performed by Dr. Charles Monroe on Thursday. Zumaya is expected to miss 12 weeks.

Getting by for a couple weeks is a lot different than having to cope for half of a season. Rodney is certainly capable of picking up a good deal of the slack, but who picks up Rodney’s slack? With the combination of set-up men Jim Leyland could either double up their innings on a given night, or have them each pitch one inning shortening the game to six innings. That luxury is gone now.

Jose Mesa will be called on, as will the lefty duo of Wil Ledezma and Bobby Seay who will likely see more LOOGY situations.

I’d expect that the Tigers will not rely on Aquilino Lopez and will either a)reach down to the minors and select one of their starting pitchers (like Virgil Vasquez or Zach Miner) or look to acquire another arm.

The other possible side effect of this is that Jim Leyland stays with his starters deeper into games. The additional workload on each starter would probably amount to no more than 5-6 innings total. As long as it doesn’t invoke pitch counts of 120+ regularly that wouldn’t be so bad.

The longer term ramifications aren’t as pleasant to think about. The middle finger is the last part of the pitcher’s body to have contact with the baseball. Any lack of feel or confidence could be devastating. This isn’t a shoulder which exists to generate a ton of torque, this is the delicate part. I’m neither a doctor nor a pitcher, but I fear that coming back from this particular injury will be much more difficult than just having the doctor go in and fix it up.

Zumaya to the DL

Joel Zumaya has been placed on the 15 day disabled list. It appears that he dislocated a finger on his throwing hand while warming up. Aquilino Lopez had a very short sojurn with Toledo and has been recalled.

Unlike the Jose Mesa injury, this one is going to sting. Fortunately, Fernando Rodney seems to have corrected his earlier problems. This will mean more high leverage situations for both lefties, Wil Ledezma and Bobby Seay, as well as Jose Mesa. I’d anticipate seeing Jim Leyland playing the platoon advantages more often now without Zumaya available to shut down the 8th inning.

Jose Mesa to the DL

The Tigers placed Jose Mesa on the 15 day disabled list retroactive to April 17th. Mesa’s injury is a groin pull. Aquilino Lopez’s contract was purchased from Toledo to take Mesa’s spot. Lopez has 4 saves and 6 1/3 scoreless innings this year. He’s only allowed 1 hit and 2 walks while fanning 6. Lopez is a right hander and will turn 32 tomorrow (nice birthday present).

Edward Campusano was transferred from the 15 to 60 day DL to free up a spot on 40 man roster.

I’m thinking the impact of this will be minimal. Mesa only has a couple of appearances and only one came in a game that was still in question. He wasn’t a key cog in the pen. If anything it may mean a little extra work for Bobby Seay. Given Mesa’s performances this year this could be a good thing (although I’m not someone to root for guys injuries).

As an aside, every time I hear about a groin injury I can’t help but think of the Cheers where Sam Malone filled in as a sportscaster and rapped “g-g-groin, g-g-groin, g-g-groin injury.’

Tigers finalize 2007 Opening Day Roster

The Tigers Opening Day roster has been officially set. It has been practically set since Monday, or course with adjustments for the Kenny Rogers and Vance Wilson injuries. I bring this up because the disabled list assignments are now finalized.

Tony Giarratano has been placed on the 60 day disabled list. Bobby Seay took his spot on the 40 man roster. I believe this is terrific news for Tony because I think he gets his full major league salary now which means he’ll get $380,000 (the league minimum) instead of being paid as a minor leaguer.

Edward Campusano and Roman Colon were the two other players still technically assigned to the big league squad and they have both been placed on the 15 day disabled list. I find this especially surprising for Campusano who I understood was to have Tommy John surgery. I’d guess the decision to place him on the 15 day DL may have something to do with his status as a Rule 5 pick. I’m not sure on the rules, but it may be that he’d have to be removed from the disabled list before being offered back to his old club (if the Tigers are so inclined) and this would give them the most flexibility.

And as a final note, Rogers is still on the 15 day disabled list. He of course could be transitioned to the 60 day if an additional 40 man spot is required.

Kenny Rogers out 3 months

So I’m watching the game on ESPN and they announce that Kenny Rogers had successful surgery to remove a blood clot and fix 2 arteries. I run to the computer and my site goes down. So I’m sorry if you were trying to hit the site between 1:30 and 4:00. It’s also the reason I’m so late to the blog with this.

D-Town Baseball seems to have the authoritative link round-up, so if you’re looking to see who said what, he’s got it.

Rogers of course is expected to miss half the season. It will be 6 to 8 weeks of rest, and then hopefully he can start throwing again. Being that he’s an athlete he may heal a little quicker than a typical person. But being that he’s 42 he may heal a little slower than a typical athlete. In any case, it will probably take him a minimum of 6 weeks to build the arm up once he can resume activity.

So while it wasn’t a worst case, career ending injury (not yet anyways), it is a far cry from needing a week or rest and some aspirin.

Vance Wilson to the DL

I fully expected some players to go on the DL this week, like Roman Colon and Edward Campusano. Didn’t see Wilson and Rogers as part of the mix though.

Wilson has been bothered by some tenderness in his elbow and it has landed him on the 15 day DL. He played yesterday, but I’m guessing he didn’t feel to good today.

Mike Rabelo will assume back-up catching duties. He’s already on the 40 man roster so it won’t require additional moves.
