Tigers Minor League Wrap 5/25/07

Toledo 8 Columbus 1
Jack Hannahan had 2 hits and David Espinosa doubled twice. Ryan Raburn had a triple and 2 walks. Ron Chiavacci allowed 1 run over 7 innings on 5 hits, 2 walks, and 3 K’s.

Erie 5 Akron 1
Jackson Melian had 3 hits and a walk. Jeff Larish singled and walked twice. Jair Jurrjens allowed 1 unearned run over 7 innings with 7 hits, 1 walk and 6 K’s.

Palm Beach 0 Lakeland 5
Lucas French threw 8 shutout innings allowing only 6 hits, a walk, and fanning 5. Ricky Steik allowed a hit, but struck out the side in one inning of work. Wil Rhymes and Max Leon each had 3 hits (Leon added a walk also). Cameron Maybin returned to the lineup and went 0 for 4 with 3 K’s and his first error of the year.

West Michign 6 Fort Wayne
Jeff Gerbe and Josh Rainwater teamed up to throw 4 scoreless innings each. Rainwater was particularly impressive allowing a single hit and fanning 4. Dek Scram, Ryan Strieby, and Santo De Leon all had multi hit games.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/24/07

Toledo 7 Columbus 6
Things haven’t gone well for Virgil Vasquez since his spot start. Once again he was roughed up, this time for 5 runs on 4 walks and 5 hits with only 2 K’s in 5 innings. Mike hessman hit a grand slam, his 12th homer of the year. Chris Shelton reached base 5 times with a single, a double, and 3 walks. The batting average (273) and OBP (416) continue to climb but the slugging just isn’t there (398). Sounds kind of like Detroit’s current first sacker.

Erie 1 Harrisburg 2
Andrew Miller made his first start since his Detroit appearance and allowed 4 hits and 1 run over 8 innings. He walked 3 and fanned 5 and induced 18 ground ball outs.Jeff Larish had 2 singles and a walk. Kody Kirkland hit his 4th homer.

Palm Beach 4 Lakeland 8
Ovandy Suero had 3 hits (and surprisingly only 1 stolen base). Wilkin Rameriez homered and singled. Burke Badenhop allowed 1 run on 7 hits over 7 innings with 1 walk and 3 K’s. Cameron Maybin sat out today and only pinch ran yesterday. I’ll see what I can find.

West Michigan 3 Beloit 2
Ryan Strieby doubled and singled while Jeff Kunkel added 3 hits. Chris Cody returned to his dominant form with 10 K’s and no walks in 8 innings of 2 run ball.

Tigers Minor League Wrap 5/23/07

Erie 7 Harrisburg 8 10 innings
The Tigers weren’t the only team in the organization to struggle in the late innings. Harrisburg scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 9th to force extra innings. Jon Connolly was one out away from a complete game. He had 9 K’s, and no walks. But he ended up being charged with 4 runs and Kyle Sleeth surrendered 3 more before he could record an out. Kody Kirkland and Andres Torres homered, and most of the starters had 2 hits.

Lakeland 5 Vero Beach 3
Ryan Roberson knocked his 11th homer. Max Leon had 2 hits. Matt O’Brien pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits with no walks and 1 K. Jacob Ramos went 2 1/3 and only allowed 2 walks while fanning 5.

West Michigan 1 Beloit 5
The Whitecaps only mustered 2 doubles and a single. Duane Below allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks over 6 innings.

Minors News

  • It looks like PJ Finigan has bone chips in his elbow. He’ll undergo additional tests.
  • More pitcher injuries with Phil Napolitan is headed to the DL. The release didn’t mention the injury, but Jose Fragoso was promoted for EST.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/22/07

Charlotte 5 Toledo 6
Chris Shelton added 2 more hits, as did Timo Perez and Mike Hessman. Hessman’s though were a double and a homer. Zach Miner was strong again allowing 6 hits and 2 runs in 7 2/3 innings. He walked 2 and fanned 6.

Erie 4 Harrisburg 5
Jeff Larish homered and doubled and Matt Joyce homered and singled. Dallas Trahern was touched for 8 hits, including 2 homers, in 6 1/3 innings an was charged with 4 runs.

Matt Joyce and Erick Almonte had the only 2 hits for the Seawolves. Andrew Kown allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, on 3 hits, no walks, and 6 strikeouts.

Lakeland 4 Vero Beach 3
Wil Rhymes had 3 hits including a double. Ryan Roberson added a double and his 10th homer to go along with a walk. Cameron Maybin singled and walked. Ovandy Suero stole his 31st, 32nd, and 33rd bases. Kyle Denney allowed 3 runs on 3 walks and 5 hits over 6 innings.

West Michigan 4 Beloit 5
Jeramy Laster hit a grand slam homer and singled. Angel Castro took the loss surrendering 5 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings.

Chris Maples was the only Hen with 2 hits, one of them a triple. Chris Shelton singled and walked, while Timo Perez doubled and walked. Ryan Raburn had a hit and 2 walks. Yorman Bazardo allowed 4 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. After Cory Hamman allowed 1 run in 1 2/3 innings, the rest of the pen (Preston Larrison, Vic Darensbourg, Aquilino Lopez, and Jeremy Johnson) combined for 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

Matt Joyce doubled and homered for the Seawolves. Mike Hollimon added 2 hits. Eddie Bonine pitched 8 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with a 3/1 K:BB ratio.

Lakeland 4 Vero Beach 15
Ryan Roberson collected his 9th homer, one of his 3 hits on the night. Cameron Maybin added a couple of singles. While the batting average and obp remain high for Maybin, he hasn’t been getting extra base hits and his slugging is down to 487. Still a respectable number for sure, but off the lofty heights of earlier in the year. Elezar Aponte was rocked to the tune of 10 runs on 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings.

West Michigan 2 Beloit 8
Deik Scram had 3 of the Cap 5 hits in this one. Jeramy Laster hit his 3rd homer to plate one of the 2 runs. Lauren Gagnier allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, 4 K’s, and 3 walks over 6 innings.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/20/07

Charlotte 3 Toledo 9
Timo Perez was a triple short of the cycle. Ramon Santiago added 3 hits and Chris Shelton had 2. Dennis Tankersley allowed 2 runs on 8 hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Akron 1 Erie 2 10 innings
Jeff Laris homered and singled, and that was half the offense. Mike Hollimon walked, but posted an 0 for 3 and has seen his batting average slide to .244. He’s still posting a 378 OBP though. Eulogio De La Cruz continues to work on his Minor League Pitcher of the Month honors. This time it was an 8 inning effort allowing 1 run on 5 hits, 1 walks, and 6 K’s.

Lakeland 2 Vero Beach 6
Cameron Maybin had 2 of the 3 Lakeland hits. Justin Justice returned to the lineup from whatever it was that kept him out of it for the last week, and walked twice. Lucas French allowed 6 runs on 9 h its over 5 innings.

West Michigan 2 Quad Cities 3
Gorkys Hernandez doubled and singled. Brennan Boesch added 2 hits as well. Jonah Nickerson allowed 3 runs on 8 hits on 5 innings. Randor Bierd pitched 3 innings and allowed only 1 hit while fanning 4. Bierd is trying to come back from an injury sustained in 2005. He was hit hard at Oneonta last year, but lately he’s been pitching well. In his last 10 appearances he’s amassed 14 innings and only 3 runs with a 19:3 K:BB ratio.

Charlotte 8 Toledo 2
Chris Shelton seems to be righting the ship with 2 more hits, including a double, and a walk. Jack Hannahan went 3 for 4. Ron Chiavacci took the loss giving up 6 runs on 7 hits and 5 walks while fanning 4.

Akron 4 Erie 0
Only 4 hits for Erie tonight, and Clete Thomas had 2 of them. Andres Torres and Jeff Larish each walked twice. Jair Jurrjens apparently hasn’t had his pinpoint command working. He allowed 9 hits in 6 innings, but more troubling were the 4 walks.

Dunedin 10 Lakeland 2 suspended in 6th inning due to power
Lakeland clearly didn’t have power mustering only 2 doubles through 5 innings (one each for Wilkin Ramirez and Ryan Roberson). Burke Badenhop allowed 6 runs, 3 earned, in 3 innings. Things didn’t get better for Alredo Figaro making his first Lakeland appearance. He allowed 4 runs in 2 2/3 innings on 5 hits and 3 walks.

West Michigan Quad Cities
Max De Leon had a double and 2 singles. Gorkys Hernandez had 2 hits and 3 RBI. Chris Cody allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, over 6 innings on 7 hits, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/17/07

Louisville 0 Toledo 1
Zach Miner wasn’t the only guy in the organization who had to change plans in the early morning. Jon Connolly was called up from Erie to start in Miner’s place for the Mud Hens and threw a 1 hitter. Actually, both pitchers threw 1 hitters, and with it being only a 7 inning game due to the doubleheader, it was completed in 1:28. Chris Shelton doubled, walked, and was hit by pitch to constitute all the Mud Hen offense.

Louisville 3 Toledo 4
Mike Hessman had 2 hits, including his 10th homer, and a walk. Jack Hannahan added 2 hits as well. Jeremy Johnson allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, walking none and fanning 5 over 6 innings.

Trenton 2 Erie 3
Jeff Larish had 2 hits to lead the Wolbes attack. Dallas Trahern went 7 innings allowing 5 runs on 2 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Kyle Sleeth pitched 2 innings allowing only 1 hit.

Dunedin 4 Lakeland 7
Michael Hernandez doubled twice among his 3 hits. Ryan Roberson singled and hit his 8th homer. Cameron Maybin went 2 for 4. Kyle Denney allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks over 5 innings.

West Michigan 5 Quad cities 2
Deik Scram had 3 hits and 2 walks for a perfect day at the plate and he had 2 stolen bases (and a caught stealing). Audy Ciriaco hit his first homer driving in 3 in the 9th inning. Angel Castro allowed 1 unearned run in 6 innings of work.

Tigers Minor League Wrap – 5/16/07

Louisville 5 Toledo 4 (11 innings, resumption of suspended game)
Time Perez had two doubles and Mike Hessman homered and doubled. Chris Shelton added 2 singles and a walk. The bullpen pieced together the rest of this game after Yorman Bazardo pitched 2 innings before the rains came on Wednesday night. Cory Hamman pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings allowing 4 hits.

Trenton 1 Erie 2
The Wolves only mustered 3 hits, two of which belonged to Erick Almonte including a homer. It was Almonte’s first game with the Seawolves. Eddie Bonine pitched 8 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits, 2 walks, and 3 K’s.

Lakeland 7 Sarasota 4
Mike Hernandez homered for one of his 3 hits. Wilkin Ramirez had 3 singles and a walk and added 3 stolen bases. Cameron Maybin and Wil Rhymes each doubled, singled, and walked. Eleazar Aponte was dinged for 3 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks and 4 K’s over 4 1/3 innings.

This game was suspended due to rain in the 2nd inning.

Eulogio De La Cruz allowed 4 runs in the first inning, but settled down and followed with 6 scoreless innings. In total he allowed 5 hits and 3 walks while fanning 7. Jeff Larish doubled and Kody Kirkland was 1 for 4.

Sarasota 1 Lakeland 2
Ovandy Suero had 2 hits, 2 walks, 4 stolen bases, and 2 caught stealing – so he was busy. Cameron Maybin was 0 for 2 with a sac fly. Justin Justice sat out again today.

Chris Shelton, Timo Perez and Mike Hessman had the only 3 hits. Dennis Tankersley allowed 10 hits and 4 walks over 6 innings but limited the damage to 2 runs. Ian Ostlund allowed his first run after 4 Toledo appearances since his promotion.

Burke Badenhop allowed 1 run on 4 hits and 5 walks over 6 innings. Cameron Maybin singled and walked. Justin Justice missed the last couple games, but nothing has been reported int he Lakeland Ledger yet.

Gorkys Hernandez and Lou Ott knocked their first homer of the year. Brennan Boesch added 2 hits. Lauren Gagnier allowed 3 runs on 7 hits.
