  1. That is pretty amazing actually….nice work by the Bilfers.

So I wake up this morning to Mike and Mike this morning and Jayson Stark says that he thinks A-Rod will end up with the Tigers and then a guy from MLB.com was on a local radio station and says that the Tigers are the “mystery team” in the A-Rod sweepstakes. What is the deal? We JUST picked up a SS, we just signed a 4 year contract with our 3B last year, why are people still thinking he’ll end up with us? I get that Boras has the track record with Dombrowski, but the Pudge and Maggs signings were different because we were the only team offering what Boras considered market value for them. A-Rod is going to get anywhere from $300-$500 million I think, and I don’t think that there are enough Little Cesar’s Pizzas in the world to make Itlitch fork out that kind of dough.

  2. Nice work billfer! It looks like Maggs has his vampire teeth on.

And thank you Chris for throwing some fuel on what I thought was the dead A-Rod speculation. I can’t stand him, his opt-out announcement during WS Game 4 was classless. The Renteria deal would seem to make it moot, but 50+ Jacks added to your already potent offense would tempt anyone.

  3. Billfer, you’re a good Dad! That’s a beautiful pumpkin.

As for A-Rod, I don’t think we have a chance in h to get him or even if they want him. But I take some of the things DD says with a grain of salt. How many times have we heard even up til last year Chris Shelton was 1st baseman of the future?

  4. I completely agree, I was trying to figure out why “baseball people” keep talking about him landing with the Tigers. I personally don’t want him either.

  5. Straight from CURT SCHILLING’S blog – 38 pitches

“The list of teams that our family has talked over, that we think would be a fit for next
year, should we not come back, are pretty much teams in cities we agree would be ok for
our last year, and teams I think have a legitimate shot at being in the post season
and/or World Series. Teams we didn’t include aren’t for any one reason. There are a
million little things that go into this from stadiums to school districts to travel to
spring training to etc. etc. etc. but the list represents the teams after Boston that
have some of the off the field things that are big to us, plus the potential to go into
    October next year.

Cleveland, Detroit, Anaheim, New York Mets, Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A., S.D., Arizona,
    Chicago Cubs, St. Louis, Milwaukee”

Even if we were to get Kenny, I’d love it if they gave some to Curt, he is a winner, has
pin-point control and is dominant in the post-season.

Plus as was seen last year you can never have too much SP depth and exp for Bondo and
    Verlander to feed off of.

With all the increased cash flow we should be able to do it.

    Verlander
    Bonderman
    Rogers
    Schilling
    Robertson
+ kids and Miner/Durbin if injuries

+ a closer and I wouldn’t mind the platoon in LF

  6. I’d love it if Curt Schilling would come to detroit for the added depth and having the great control

    him and kenny?

plus bondo and verlander and robertson?

you can never have too much depth

  7. I am mystified how you made this Maggli-O-Lantern

The part that glows is from the candle inside correct? Then how is his mouth and pretty much all the rest of him “floating” in what seems to be the part that is cut out?

Is there some amazing trick to cutting pumpkins that I have been missing my whole life?

  8. Thanks for the compliments guys. Glad you liked it.

Rob – You’re actually seeing 3 different things. The dark parts are the parts that are just left as is. The brightest parts are the parts that are carved all the way through. The other stuff is where the skin and part of the flesh of the pumpkin is peeled allowing more light to come through.

It’s typically not too hard, but it can be tedious. This was my second one of the day after doing one that looks like our dog at my daughter’s request. The pumpkins this year had really tough flesh/skin making the peeling really hard. Hence the none straight lines and uneven light. My hands were simply too tired.

And so you know, I didn’t free hand this stuff. I created templates from existing pictures I had, taped the templates to the pumpkin, and used a poker to make little holes where to carve/peel.

The other trick is to use a 25 watt bulb to light the thing instead of a candle.

  9. PS: If we’re willing to spend the money on AROD, do you really thing theyre gonna care about Inge’s money?

  10. Billfer, you’re the man — I haven’t crunched the stats, but my own carving misadventures indicate that your Maggs-O-Lantern has an incredible VORP (Value Over Replacement Pumpkin).

I’m just glad my daughter is too young to know what she’s missing having a dad who, best case, might pull off the old “two triangles, one inverted triangle, and a rectangle” without slicing open a vein!

  11. Boras’ people are probably leaking/floatingthat the Tigers are still in the mix and a could be a dark horse to get AL-Rod just to make the other team(s) think they better pony up what he’s asking for or else. That seems almost normal operating procedure these days. (at least thats what I”m hoping is going on)

And great work bilfer! I personally made a Neifi jack-o-lantern and then punted it on to Detroit Ave. (my street) In my defense I was hopped up on greenies at the time.

  12. So now that Carlos Guillen is officially the “first baseman of the future” does that mean we will trade Shelton? Maybe a small-market struggling team will take a chance on him. Problem, of course, is that Tampa Bay and Washington already have former Tiger 1st-basemen and won’t be interested. It would be nice to get a relief pitcher or two for him. Of course, if he showed some real promise as a catcher, we could move him back there, but I doubt it.
It is nice to see a need being met the first day of the offseason. Reassures us that management and ownership care and will work to address the other problem areas.
Is this the year? I’m hoping so. I’m hoping the Yankees miss Torre a lot, maybe Rivera and/or Posada don’t return because Torre is not there (they can follow him to the Dodgers), and some of their guys will show their age and they miss the playoffs. I’m hoping Cleveland will struggle as Fausto Carmona remembers who he is and everyone puts their best against them. I’m hoping Boston has a let-down after winning it all.
Whatever happens it will be fun! That’s why they play the games.
It’s so good to care again

  13. Great job on the pumpkin, Billfer. I like how it looks like he has bling in his mouth. I am not a young whippersnapper, but I would say you gave him a nice grill. 🙂
