Game 2012.110: Yankees at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 59-50, 2nd place, 1.5 back.

Too many strikeouts;  way too many strikeouts.  Somehow though, Justin Verlander was able to overcome his 14-strikeout performance (a career high), and put away the Yankees, the 9th consecutive Comerica Park win for the Tigers.

All of the strikeouts meant no complete game (he tied a career high with 132 pitches–an amazing 96 of which were strikes), and that Tiger specialty, the pitcher’s error led to 2 unearned runs, and meant no shutout, but Verlander’s performance was dominant enough–and on ESPN–and against the Yankees–that one is hearing the C-word bandied about again.

No moment probably showed how dominant Verlander was more than his 3rd strikeout of Ichiro, on which his swing was so off-balance he almost fell down. Ichiro is not what he used to be, but he is still the hardest batter to strike out in the American League (9.1% K ratio), and it’s safe to say (but harder to look up) that he has never been struck out 3 times in a game by the same pitcher before.

There was plenty of hitting to go around to back Verlander up:  every starter had at least one hit (including big flies from Fielder and Cabrera); the bottom of the order came through again (5 hits, 3 RBI from the 7-9 hitters); 7 different players had RBIs.

And Austin Jackson continues to be hot, prompting him to be listed as the 5th best CF in baseball, a pretty nice ranking when you look at the other names on the list.

Tonight the Tigers go for their 6th in a row and 10th in a row at home, and look to add to their 16-14 record against AL East teams (they are the only Central club over .500).

Detroit hands the ball to Rick Porcello,  the one Tiger pitcher not suffering from Too Many Strikeouts. Phil Hughes himself may be feeling a bit at home in Detroit: he has only given up 1 run in his last 22 innings at Comerica.

Toledo Forecast: Heat. Bruce Rondon of the 100 mph fastball was promoted to Toledo yesterday, joining Al Alburquerque and his upper 90s fastball.

**********

Stat of the Day: When Omar Infante stole 2nd base Saturday against Cleveland, Detroit recorded its first SB by a 2B in 2012, ending its run as the last team in baseball without a stolen base from the position.

Today’s Player of the Pre-game:  Omar Infante. With Jackson hot and Cabrera and Fielder in form, Infante’s ability to get on base/advance runners may be the key to tonight’s game.

Today’s Keeping-Omar-2nd-Even-Against-The-RHP Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Omar Infante 2B
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Brennan Boesch RF
  6. Delmon Young DH
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Andy Dirks LF

Game 2012.109: Yankees at Tigers

Well, the less said about last night’s game, the better.

Wait, hold on…they did WHAT?

They like to say “it ain’t over ’till it’s over.”  But often, well, it just is.  Down 23 at the 2-minute warning in football, and…well, we could score, onside kick, score again, onside…oh never mind.  Basketball:  well, keep fouling, make a 3-pointer, foul again, ‘nother 3-pointer…OK, never mind–but the game does seem to take forever to end, so there’s that.

Baseball, though, is different.  2 outs in the 10th inning down by 3, 2 strikes on the batter…well he COULD get a walk, and the next guy too, and then a double, and a single, and hey! Not very likely (it has happened only once this season), but very possible.

And all after the 9th inning looked like a classic fail (but a somewhat tolerable one; they still would’ve taken the series)–a leadoff triple they couldn’t score, after Manny Acta out managed Acting Manager:  the old double intentional walk/pulling an outfielder/adding an extra infielder trick (which I don’t think I’ve ever seen).

(To be fair, I thought Lloyd made a good move–pinch-hitting one of the toughest double-play outs in the league in a spot where a ground ball that is not a DP probably wins the game).

**********

Losing closer Chris Perez once famously said (May 25):  “You look over there and you’ve got Cabrera and Fielder and Verlander and Valverde.  But that doesn’t win baseball games. Good teams win baseball games.”

He left out Austin Jackson.  Jackson had 9 total bases yesterday (including back-to-back triples), and if his double in the 10th wasn’t the game winner, it was the shot that put Perez on the ropes.  In fact the 1-2 hitters Jackson and Infante combined for an 8-for-12 night with 17 total bases.  That will win you a few games.  (And another great thing about baseball:  the goat of the 9th inning, Infante, came up with the game tying hit in the next inning).

The walk off shot of course was by Cabrera, a towering fly that was a bit in doubt until it cleared. Cabrera wasn’t about to take all the glory though–Cabrera insisted Austin Jackson join him for the postgame interview. And I think it’s time to acknowledge that Cabrera is not only an amazing baseball player, but a first-rate teammate also.  Such is the stuff good teams are made of.

******

Tonight Justin Verlander tries to right his ship (tongue-in-cheek: see below).

Yankee starter Ivan Nova (Spanish for “I don’t want to go out there”) takes the mound for the Evil Empire with a 10.13 ERA vs Detroit this season.

**********

Also newest Tiger Jeff Baker joins the Tigers today.  To make room for Baker, Danny Worth goes back down to Toledo again, for the umpteenth time. The last time he got sent down (July 24) he vowed to buy a new guitar to make himself feel better.  He is a man of his word. Meanwhile, Ryan Raburn will continue to have a sprained thumb until September 1 call ups.

**********

Stat of the Day: Justin Verlander has “struggled” in the 2nd half–to the tune of a 2-2 record with a 2.89 ERA, and a 1.107 WHIP.  Not Cy Young stuff that, but relax everybody.

Today’s Player of the Pre-game:  Austin Jackson.  AJax tore it up yesterday, and has a brief but rewarding relationship with Ivan Nova, hitting .375 in 9 PAs. The A-Train keeps on rolling tonight.

Today’s Two-Out-Rally Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Andy Dirks LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Brennan Boesch RF
  6. Delmon Young DH
  7. Alex Avila C
  8. Jhonny Peralta SS
  9. Omar Infante 2B

Game 2012.105: Tigers at Red Sox

Detroit Tigers, 54-50, 2nd place, 2.5 3 back.

Well, maybe the less said about the past two games the better.  It was a bit annoying that they started the game in the rain, played in the rain, then called the game once it became official (with bases loaded no less).

Although that was all fine with Jim Leyland.

By the way the early conclusion of the game ended Verlander’s streak of 6-inning plus starts. After the game Verlander tweeted: “Thx to all who followed the streak. Was an honor to be mentioned in same breath as Carlton, Gibson #legends. Now let’s start a win streak..”.

After seeing Delmon Young ripped here last night, Leyland has taken the drastic move of bumping him to 6th in the batting order.

Stat of the Day: Doug Fister has been the staff ace in the 2nd half: 3-1, 1.80, with a team-leading 31 Ks.

Today’s Player of the Pre-game:  Brennan Boesch.  Leyland got all crazy and swapped Boesch and Young in the 5 and 6 spots, lets see how Boesch does.

Today’s Not-Set-In-Stone-After-All Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Quintin Berry LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Brennan Boesch RF
  6. Delmon Young DH
  7. Alex Avila C
  8. Jhonny Peralta SS
  9. Ramon Santiago 2B

Game 2012.104: Tigers at Red Sox

Detroit Tigers, 54-49, 2nd place, 1.5 back.

With the trade deadline past and the Tigers standing pat, perhaps it is time once more to look at the Detroit DH situation.  The Tigers still rank 13th of 14 teams in DH performance, which is exactly where they stood when we looked at this a couple of months ago.  Tiger DHs have combined for a .248 average and a measly .646 OPS, underwhelmed only by Seattle (.600).  To put that in perspective, Brandon Inge currently has a .664 OPS with Oakland. In other words, the Tigers would be an improved team with Inge as their DH.

In addition, the 5th spot in the batting order is also 13th best in the AL, tied with Texas (how did THAT happen?), better than only KC, with a .254 average and .670 OPS.  Not coincidentally, the DH and 5th spot in the order are the same guy (who may also be the worst LF in the league, but we’ll leave that now that he is full-time DH), Delmon Young.  Somehow, batting behind Jackson, Cabrera, and Fielder, Young has only managed 44 RBI, and has the worst RBI production of any DH.

Last night’s game featured a perfect microcosm of the problem with the 5th spot in the Tiger lineup.  In the 3rd inning with one out and Cabrera and Jackson on 1st and 2nd, Boston pitched around Prince Fielder, and Young obliged by hitting into an inning-ending double play.

So what is the solution? I have a feeling Detroit may have been playing Waiting For V-Mart to solve the problem.  But it now looks like that is not going to happen.

Here is one suggestion.  When Dirks finishes his rehab (he hit a home run today for Toledo by the way), someone needs to go.  I think most likely (in order) is Don Kelly, Quintin Berry, or Ryan Raburn (Raburn benefitting from Too Many Left-Handers).  How about instead dumping Young and bringing back Dirks as the DH?

It may seem a waste of the best corner outfield glove on the team, but it would help protect his sore achilles.  It would leave the team short one more right-handed bat, but Dirks hits left-handers pretty well anyway (.799 career OPS vs .771 against RHP), at any rate much better than Young has been.

Another option of course is still Soriano, who the Cubs are keeping as of the deadline, but should clear waivers for an August deal.

Stat of the Day: Detroit has the best stolen base success rate in the AL (40-of-50, 80%)–they also have the fewest attempts in the league.

Today’s Player of the Pre-game:  Justin Verlander.  With the offense still struggling, it’s time for Justin to come up with one of his classic Justin games.

Today’s Un-Traded Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Quintin Berry LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Delmon Young DH
  6. Brennan Boesch RF
  7. Alex Avila C
  8. Jhonny Peralta SS
  9. Omar Infante 2B

Game 2012.103: Tigers at Red Sox

Detroit Tigers, 54-48, 2nd place, 1.5 back.

The Tigers, who were a Peralta away from being swept by the Blue Jays, will stay East and try the Red Sox for a 3-game set that ends Wednesday night on ESPN.

Even though the Tigers have started strong in the 2nd half (10-6), they have still been a bit of an offensive jugger-not.  They are batting .257 as a team since the break (.269 before), with a bit less power (.400 SLG vs .420 first half).

Maybe Fenway will perk them up:  Detroit hit .296 in its first 4-game series there, smashed 6 home runs, and scored 18.

If the suddenly-consistent Max Scherzer has another outing like his last, they may not need much offense.  Scherzer now is 5-1, 2.54 over his last 7 starts, with 54 Ks and only 14 walks, although he has given up a home run in 4 consecutive starts.

Stat of the Day: Ramon Santiago and Ryan Raburn are batting a combined .000 at Fenway in 2012. The bar is low for Infante.

Today’s Player of the Pre-game: Jhonny Peralta.  The H-Factor already has 2 home runs at Fenway this season.  Can he do it 2 games in a row?

Today’s Leftist Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Quintin Berry LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Delmon Young DH
  6. Brennan Boesch RF
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Omar Infante 2B

Game 2012.99: Indians at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 53-45, 1st place, tied.

Where did Mysterious Max go? Max Scherzer is looking downright consistent these days, and he racked up a W in his 4th consecutive decision. He held the Indians to 3 hits and struck out too many (8), and now has 35 Ks in his last 32 innings.

Quintin Berry had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a walk, and knocking in 2.  Quintin credits his hitting ability to…bunting practice.

Berry’s continued success gives the Tigers a very interesting problem in the outfield.  With Dirks finally on his rehab path, there will be a body too many on the Outfield section of the roster.  If it seems obvious Raburn must go, remember that Berry, Boesch, Dirks, and Kelly are all lefties.  Considering that Leyland loves the RH/LH platoon, there is a good chance that we will be gnashing our teeth over Raburn for a while.

**********

Tonight Detroit has a chance to win its 3rd consecutive post-break series.  A very good chance, since Justin Verlander takes the mound.  Also a very good chance for another too-many-strikeouts night.  That is if they play–looking like a good possibility of at least a delay tonight.

Meanwhile, in Indian news, the Player Previously Known As Fausto Carmona begins his career as Roberto Hernandez with a rehab assignment (“rehab” for identity fraud?) against the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Stat of the Day: Since the break, Detroit starters are 8-2, 3.46 ERA, with a 1.077 WHIP

Today’s Player of the Pre-game: Joaquin Benoit.  He may not be needed with Verlander on the mound, but he’ll be in the bullpen enjoying his birthday.

Today’s Infantiago Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Quintin Berry LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Delmon Young DH
  6. Brennan Boesch RF
  7. Alex Avila C
  8. Ramon Santiago SS
  9. Omar Infante 2B

Game 2012.98: Indians at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 52-45, 1st place, tied.

For whatever reason, the Tigers have just matched up badly with Cleveland so far this season, especially against Ubaldo Jimenez (2-0, 2.84 vs Detroit), who is beginning to look like this season’s Carl Pavano. They didn’t seem to be overly-aggressive (Jimenez and the strike zone are not best friends), they got plenty of base runners, but, other than Cabrera’s 2-run shot (could he be hitting any better right now?) just couldn’t put anything together.

Perhaps they will fare better tonight against Dearborn native Derek Lowe.  Lowe got bombed by the Orioles last out, giving up 9 runs in only 3 innings. On the other hand, Lowe has been tough on the two Tigers he has significant appearances against:  Cabrera is a mere .192 in 28 PA, Fielder .240 in 30 PAs, without a single extra base hit.  Perhaps the big hits will come from the 2nd half of the order (Young, 4-for-8, Peralta 3-for-6, Boesch 2-for-3).

The Tigers look for another strong performance from Max “Too Many Strikeouts” Scherzer.  Scherzer was brilliant last out against the Angels (1 run, 9 Ks), but doesn’t have the best history against Cleveland, especially at Progressive (0-3, 7.48).  Guy to look out for:  Shin-Soo Choo, who has scorched Scherzer (10-for-17, 1.608 OPS).

Stat of the Day: Fister’s error last night was the 14th by Tiger pitchers, which leads the major leagues. (Cleveland pitchers have only 3).

Today’s Player of the Pre-game: Brennan Boesch.  Just a hunch.

Today’s Let’s-Try-This-Again Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Quintin Berry LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Delmon Young DH
  6. Brennan Boesch RF
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Omar Infante 2B

Game 2012.97: Tigers at Indians

Detroit Tigers, 52-44, 1st place, up 1 game.

Game 1 of the new Tiger lineup starts tonight. Omar Infante rejoins the Tigers, as they look to continue their 5 day win streak and command of their Central division foes (20-14 in the division).

Tonight Doug “2nd Half” Fister goes for his 3rd straight strong outing, against Ubaldo “Human Trade Deadline Warning Label” Jimenez.

Infante is in the lineup tonight, despite the right-hander on the mound.  Which is either the Leyland thing where the new guy starts right away, or means there won’t be any more platooning at 2nd.

**********

Kevin’s trade thread is here.

I like the trade too, and the Infante part of the trade I had been expecting. An ex-Tiger, a Marlin, a Venezuelan, and a 2nd-baseman who can hit.  What’s not to like?

The Anibal Sanchez end of the trade is more interesting.  Trading for a rental always has its downside (Sanchez is a free agent at the end of the year).  But there is all the reason to believe that the Tigers can keep Sanchez if they want him:  he should feel comfortable amongst his fellow Venezuelans (Miguel Cabrera is from the same home town, Maracay), and his agent is Scott Boras, who seems to work better with the Tigers than any team in baseball.

There are also a couple of intriguing things in the Sanchez stat line for this season.  In addition to his excellent 3-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio (look out Leyland–too many strikeouts!), his ground ball to fly ball ratio has shifted dramatically this season toward the ground ball, a 1.43 vs career 1.21. This on a team with a much worse left-side of the infield than the Tigers, which may explain in part why his performance against RHB has taken a dive this season (2.88 BAA vs career 2.55 BAA).

Which brings up another concern about the Sanchez part of the trade.  The Tigers are now left with a pure right-handed rotation, which is a big vulnerability (think facing the Yankees in Yankee stadium).  I feel a bit better after looking at Sanchez’ splits.  Over his career he actually is as tough on lefties as on righties (career .253 BAA vs career .255 BAA), and this year actually much tougher (.229 BAA vs .288 BAA).

Sanchez is scheduled to make his Tiger debut against Toronto saturday.

**********

To make room for Omar Infante, Detroit has shipped Danny Worth back to Toledo.  No tears were shed, nor did Danny curse his fate: “In honor of getting optioned down for the 11th time (I think?) of my career, I shall buy a sweet ass electric guitar.”

There are more moves to come. Andy Dirks continues his rehab assignment at Toledo, and Al Alburquerque begins his at Lakeland.

Stat of the Day: This one is for you Anibal:  meet your new 3rd baseman.  Hanley Ramirez Runs From Fielding Value: -10 runs.  Miguel Cabrera: -1.

Today’s Player of the Pre-game: Omar Infante.  Welcome back to the D.

Today’s Infantastic Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Quintin Berry LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Delmon Young DH
  6. Brennan Boesch RF
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Omar Infante 2B

Game 2012.93: Angels at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 48-44, 2 1/2 games behind Chicago.

Doug Fister had his best start of the season, and after two good starts in a row he looks like the Fister from the 2011 pennant run. Fister gave up a solo HR to Albert Pujols in the 1st, and only allowed a single and 2 walks after that, until he was pulled in the 9th at 108 pitches.  Fister struck out 10, which hopefully won’t trigger Leyland’s Too Many Strikeouts response.

Leyland said after the game that he originally was going to give Fister a shot at the complete game, but that Fister felt a little bit stiff so it wasn’t worth the risk (also, as Jeff Molby pointed out last night he hadn’t gone beyond 96 pitches since his injury).

Brennan Boesch continues to bash, adding 2 doubles last night to his home run the night before. Since the break, Boesch is leading the Tigers with a 1.149 OPS, and also leading the team with 7 RBI.

**********

Today the Tigers look to go 2-for-2 in post-break series, and send out Max Scherzer vs Angels right-hander Jerome Williams. Scherzer had one of his Bad Max outings last out (4 runs and 9 hits in 5 innings); Williams is making his 2nd start since an asthma attack landed him in the hospital.

The Tigers are also going with Danny Worth again at 2B, instead of the usual Santiago platoon.  It may be the Tigers want to take an extended look at Worth (or give someone else one) before making a move.

The popular rumor of the moment has the Tigers re-acquiring 2B Omar Infante, which makes a lot of sense.  Not only is Infante an ex-Tiger, but he is a Marlin, and you know how that is. At any rate the Tigers are supposedly the team most likely to make a deadline deal.

Stat of the Day: Prince Fielder leads the Tigers with an On Base Percentage of an even .500 since the break.

Today’s Player of the Pre-game: Brennan Boesch. Boesch is in a groove right now.  With Cabrera and Fielder getting on base regularly in front of him, Boesch adds to his RBI total (as long as Delmon can avoid the GIDP).

Today’s Let’s-See-What-Danny’s-Worth Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Quintin Berry LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Delmon Young DH
  6. Brennan Boesch RF
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Danny Worth 2B

Game 2012.92: Angels at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 47-44, 3 1/2 games behind Chicago.

Alice Cooper threw out the ceremonial first pitch before last night’s game, and from that point on it was Welcome To My Nightmare for young Jacob Turner, who bombed.

An outburst of offense was predicted, but I didn’t quite have that in mind (the Tiger offense politely refrained from getting involved).

But the good news is that it only counts as one loss, and we go into tonight’s game all tied up in the series.

It isn’t going to get any easier to score runs though:  the Angels send out C.J. Wilson (9-5, 2.43).  Fister will try to duplicate his strong last out performance (7 innings, 1 run, 3 hits, 8 Ks) and show he is back from his injury.

Actually the Tigers already won today–they won a pick in the Competitive Balance Lottery.

On the trade front, the word is that Detroit is actively seeking pitching.  Ryan Dempster still tops the rumor list, but one angle not mentioned enough is that he would have to approve any trade, and has said he thinks the Dodgers would be a good fit.

Dempster isn’t good enough for Drew Sharp, who says the the Tigers MUST get either Cole Hamels or Zack Greinke.  No, no says Lynn Henning. The Tigers should be cautious and just make a little trade for a 2nd baseman.

Stat of the Day: The Tigers fell 4 games short of the equivalent of an entire season without being shutout, when their streak ended last night at 158 games.

Today’s Player of the Pre-game: Ryan Raburn. He is SO due!

Today’s Let’s-Hope-Fister’s-Really-Good-Tonight Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Ryan Raburn LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Delmon Young DH
  6. Jhonny Peralta SS
  7. Brennan Boesch RF
  8. Gerald Laird C
  9. Danny Worth 2B

Game 2012.91: Angels at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 47-43, 2 1/2 games behind Chicago.

A lot went right for the Tigers last night, as they beat the Angels and finally gained a game on the White Sox.  Perhaps no moment was better than in the 7th inning, when Berry singled, stole 2nd, stole 3rd, and tied the game on the sometimes-elusive sacrifice fly.  The Boesch Basch was the cherry on top.

When was the last time the Tigers had someone in the top 10 in stolen bases? Q-Berry is now 13th with a bullet, as one used to say.

As Kevin noted, there was an almost playoff-like atmosphere to the game last night.  In fact, if the playoffs were to be held today, the first game would be a one-game wild card matchup between the Tigers and the Angels.

That game would not likely feature Jacob Turner, making his 2nd start of the season, or Garrett Richards, who is 0-1, 12.46 in his last 2 starts.  The forecast calls for an 80% chance of offensive outbursts.

Turner’s outing today could be a bit of a showcase; his name comes up regularly in the trade deadline rumors, which now include, in addition to the unlikely Dempster and more likely Scutaro rumors, one that has the Tigers pursuing pretty much half of the Diamondbacks.

Stat of the Day: Latroy Hawkins, who came in last night in the 7th, intentionally walked Prince Fielder, who was 3-4 lifetime against him.  Hawkins fared better against dad: Cecil Fielder was a career 1-for-11 against him.

Today’s Player of the Pre-game: Quintin Berry.  Berry is one of two players in the league with at least 10 stolen bases who has yet to be caught stealing (14-for-14).  The other is across the field, Maicer Izturis (11-for-11).

Today’s It-Worked-Last-Night Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Quintin Berry LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Delmon Young DH
  6. Brennan Boesch RF
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Ramon Santiago 2B

Game 2012.90: Angels at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 46-43, 3 1/2 games behind Chicago.

The Tigers try to continue their 2nd-half surge with a 4-game series against the redundantly named Los Angeles Angels.  The series will feature neither Justin Verlander nor Jered Weaver, much less a rematch between the two, since they both pitched yesterday.  Perhaps that will have to wait until the 1-game wild card playoff.

Instead Rick Porcello will take the stage for tonight’s ESPN Monday Night Baseball affair, and try to stop the Trout-Trumbo express, which has combined for an 8.0 WAR (a fancy way of saying they are worth as much as the rest of the team combined).

They are right handers, but the righty-righty match won’t necessarily help Kid Rick:  Porcello this season has given up a .319 BA against RHB, and .318 against LHB.  (Yes, that seems awfully high…but you see, there are all those ground balls, and there is the Tiger infield…).

The Tigers face Ervin Santana, who has the AL 3rd worst ERA at 5.75

Or you could look at the matchup as the meeting of the two highest priced free agents:  it’s Pujols vs Fielder! (Just trying to guess the ESPN angle).

In other news, the Tigers are still supposedly interested in Ryan Dempster and Marco Scutaro.

Stat of the Day: The Tigers have yet to be shutout this season.

Today’s Player of the Pre-game: Jhonny Peralta.  Over the past 2 weeks he is hitting .344 (.989 OPS), and even his outs have been largely of the hard-hit sort.  Is he coming back into 2011 form?

Today’s Trying-To-Score-From-2nd-On-A-Shallow-Single Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Quintin Berry LF
  3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
  4. Prince Fielder 1B
  5. Delmon Young DH
  6. Brennan Boesch RF
  7. Jhonny Peralta SS
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Ramon Santiago 2B
