Game 2017.3: Red Sox at Tigers, 2017 Home Opener

It’s too soon to tell, especially after the way the season sputtered to a start in the rain, but this offense certainly has the look of one that will have us crossing our fingers and hoping for a few home runs: they don’t look rally-worthy, especially with Victor clogging the bases whenever he gets on, Kinsler getting picked off as much as professionally possible, and various other clownery.

It’s the Curly Fries Offense (or nothing). Well, they do have one non-HR RBI , courtesy of Alex Avila of all people.

It doesn’t help that Miguel Cabrera has started the season 0-for-6, which isn’t really a big deal, but still is something he has never done before (which is pretty incredible).

But none of that matters today. The season has barely begun, and there is a whole lot of time to prove initial impressions wrong. And it’s Home Opener Day! Pudge Rodriguez will throw out the first pitch, the outfield grass sports a MR. I tribute, the planes will fly overhead, much will be had to eat and drink, and baseball will be back in the D. Enjoy, everyone!

Today’s Home Opener Lineup:

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
  2. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  4. Victor Martinez, DH
  5. Justin Upton, LF
  6. Tyler Collins, RF
  7. James McCann, C
  8. JaCoby Jones, CF
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS

Michael Fulmer, P

Fingers Collins was all the Tiger offense yesterday, and earns himself another start.

On the Red Sox side of things, the Tigers get a bit of a break with Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez both out with “flu-like symptoms,” and Xander Bogaerts already out on bereavement.

Opening Day, 2017: Tigers at White Sox

***UPDATE*** The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 2:10

Well, actual opening day is likely to be some other day, seeing as the forecast for game time currently shows and 81% chance of rain. But we can still enjoy the idea of Opening Day today, right?

2017 Detroit Tigers Roster

C James McCann
C Alex Avila

1B Miguel Cabrera
2B Ian Kinsler
3B Nick Castellanos
SS Jose Iglesias
IF Dixon Machado
IF Andrew Romine

LF Justin Upton
CF JaCoby Jones

SP Jordan Zimmermann
SP Michael Fulmer

RP Alex Wilson

On the 40-Man Roster:
RF JD Martinez (10-day DL)
C John Hicks
P Sandy Baez
P Chad Bell
P Drew Verhagen
P Daniel Stumpf
P Warwick Saupold
P Jairo Labourt
P Buck Farmer
P Blaine Hardy
P Myles Jaye
P Victor Alcantara

Whether this is or isn’t a well-constructed roster, it certainly is a well-paid one. The Tigers have surpassed the Yankees and are now the highest paid team in the American League, surpassed only by the Dodgers in MLB. The new collective bargaining agreement adds a little salt on top, as the Tigers are over the 195 million salary threshold by almost $4 million as it stands, and will have to pay a 30% luxury tax on every dollar they spend over $195 million.

Here is a roster summary that also highlights some non-roster prospects worth paying attention to. I personally think it will be interesting to see how Anthony Gose does trying his hand at pitching, of all things. Apparently he threw 97 in high school (who knew?) and has already had one impressive bullpen session. And he shouldn’t be afraid to throw high and tight: with his speed he can get off the mound and out of reach in a hurry.

Opening Day Undefeated Lineup:

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
  2. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  4. Victor Martinez, DH
  5. Justin Upton, LF
  6. Mikie Mahtook, RF
  7. James McCann, C
  8. JaCoby Jones, CF
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS

Justin Verlander, P

If this game gets off the ground, expect Mikie Mahtook to be quite a battler—he already took on my spellcheck hard a few times today.

Spring Training 2017

Ah, Spring Training!

The turtle has finished its song, and retired to his turtle-nook, quietly shaking his head. What’s all the fuss about some groundhog anyway? When the turtle says it is spring, it is spring, and the boys of summer grab their gloves and take the field under the Florida sun and in the Arizona desert.

It is actually baseball weather in the midwest at the moment, but that will come and go, like the prevailing opinion of who the Tiger centerfielder will be. Florida is where it is at in Tigerland right now, albeit with the absence of Mr. Illitch clouding the skies a bit.

Still, spring is for hope, and hope and spring pair like wine and cheese. Hope isn’t really a plan though, and it seems like most of what happened in the offseason for the Tigers was a bunch of hoping that the pieces they already have will grow to fit in their many-gapped puzzle. Well, we shall see.

Miguel Cabrera, at least, isn’t writing this season off. He is focusing on hitting in addition to hitting: he has added boxing to his offseason workout.

The Donkey is back! The illustrious Don Kelly has been hired as a pro scout for Detroit.

Who will play center? This is one of the burning questions of the season, and we can hope at least someone will. Well, I guess that’s inevitable. The Tigers are hoping Gose will miraculously be good. They are rooting hard! Umm, OK. They are also hoping Tyler “Fingers” Collins will be good. Or maybe Mikie Mahtook, who they are hoping is better than he was on Tampa Bay. Then there is Jacoby Jones, who one hopes will mature into the position. I will save the Most Hopeful award though for Omar Infante, who hopes he can be the centerfielder, since he played center a little bit almost a decade ago. Hey, if not here, then where?

Also destined to spend some time roaming center is Andrew Romine, who showed up to camp with eight different gloves, and wins the Don Kelly award by a landslide.

Also there is a lot of talk about who will bat second, and I will refrain from posting links from that one, because, well, Justin Upton is batting second. Justin Upton is definitely not batting second. Could Miggy bat 2nd? Miggy is definitely not batting second. Castellenos might bat second! (That’s the latest one).

I would be remiss if I left out the doings of Major League Baseball, which has implemented the new fabulous time-saving automatic intentional walk rule. The intentional walk is now automatic, and is signaled by a gesture from the dugout (much fun was had on twitter with suggested gestures). Intentional walks totaled 1410 minutes in 2016, so the new rule will make games an average of 35 seconds shorter. Whee!!! Hold on to your seatbelts, these games will fly by now!. I’m not a fan of the rule. It could, and may soon be worse: they are testing a new extra-inning rule in the low minors, where teams start out with a runner on second base. Each out that nobody scores, everyone has to do shots (OK, I made up the second part). Obviously I am less than enamored of these changes.

Finally, a note about the website. It seems that commenting on past posts is not possible. I know no more about this than you do. Perhaps Kevin can shed some light on it.

Mr. Ilitch 1929 – 2017

From his first Little Caesars outlet in Garden City strip mall in 1959 — where a pizza cost $2.39 — Ilitch, aided at every step by Marian, his wife of 61 years,  became a major metro Detroit personality and a key figure in the revival of downtown Detroit. In addition to founding the Little Caesars pizza chain, he owned the Red Wings, Tigers and the Fox Theatre, and operated city-owned Joe Louis, Cobo, and Little Caesars arenas, among other smaller businesses, teams and restaurants….

Thank you, Mr. I.

Game 2016.161: Tigers at Braves

All of MLB tees off at about 3:00 today. Did that happen last season too? Maybe I just wasn’t paying attention last season. These season there are three games going that will demand our attention.

I’d normally say there is too much at stake to worry about individual numbers today, but Detroit’s chances at a postseason game are going to be directly related to the ERA title. Verlander ERA sits at 3.10, Toronto’s Sanchez sits at 3.06, and both start today, with Detroit needing either Toronto or Baltimore to lose to have a chance to play Monday for a tie. If the do play Monday, it’s Fulmer’s turn to start, so Verlander could also give the rookie a shot at the ERA title by pitching well today.

This one won’t be easy: the Braves start their ace, Tehran, and the team and the fans will have an emotional rush as they say goodbye to Turner Field today, with a ceremony before the game.

Today’s Stayin’ Alive Lineup:

  1. Kinsler, 2B
  2. Maybin, CF
  3. Cabrera, 1B
  4. JD Martinez, RF
  5. Upton, LF
  6. Castellanos, 3B
  7. McCann, C
  8. Iglesias, SS
  9. Verlander, P

Game 2016.160: Tigers at Braves

Here we go, three left, we need to win at least two. I think this is the game, the one that will determine things. If the Tigers win this one, they go into tomorrow with Verlander on the mound.

And what can you say about Cabrera? “Locked in” is an understatement; I can’t think of the last time I saw anyone dead-center two balls in the same game, much less in a must-win game. I have a feeling they will need a few runs tonight, with “No, Really, I’m Ready Now Zimmermann on the mound.

Oh, and the Orioles just lost.

Today’s Lineup:

  1. Kinsler, 2B
  2. Maybin, CF
  3. Cabrera, 1B
  4. JD Martinez, RF
  5. Upton, LF
  6. Castellanos, 3B
  7. Saltalamacchia, C
  8. Iglesias, SS
  9. Zimmermann, P

Game 2016.159: Tigers at Braves

This is turning out to be a strange, if not strangely exciting end to the season, as the Tigers finish out, once again, with an interleague series on the road (Detroit finished 2013 at the Marlins). That means, oh boy! the pitchers get to bat, which I guess is one advantage to having long-time NL’er Zimmermann in the rotation. Norris is no slouch though, he hit a 2-run HR last season.

The team formerly known as The Worst Team in Baseball seems to have found themselves, and is actually the hottest team in baseball–the Braves have won 10 of the last 11.

Game time for the makeup game with Cleveland is set for 1:10 Monday, if necessary, which it likely will be if Detroit takes 2-of-3. One scenario no one has mentioned: if the Tigers are eliminated from the wild card, but Cleveland is within a game of anyone for playoff seeding, the makeup game will be necessary. And quite a drag.

Daniel Norris has motored on down to Hotlanta to start this off. There’s a great little documentary on Van Norrison on YouTube, check it out:

Tonight’s Lineup:

  1. Kinsler, 2B
  2. Maybin, CF
  3. Cabrera, 1B
  4. JD Martinez, RF
  5. Upton, LF
  6. Castellanos, 3B
  7. McCann, C
  8. Iglesias, SS
  9. Norris, P

Victor on the bench looking for his 4th PH home run of the season. Gates Brown, eat your heart out.

Game 2016.158: Indians at Tigers

Okay friends, lots to watch for tonight.

First of all, the obvious one, we’re 1 game out of the Wild Card. It’s a crowded race, there is no margin for error. 5-0 doesn’t guarantee us in, but I think that 4-1 probably gets us to at least a (first) play-in game.

Secondly, Fulmer needs 6 1/3 to qualify for the ERA title. He’s got a decent lead, it would be great for him to win it to cinch ROY.

Third, Casty is back. This is a good looking lineup.

1. Ian Kinsler, 2B

2. Cameron Maybin, CF

3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B

4. Victor Martinez, DH

5. J.D. Martinez, RF

6. Justin Upton, LF

7. Nick Castellanos, 3B

8. James McCann, C

9. Jose Iglesias, SS
